Commercial Description:
Baltus, a hybrid style, is a top-fermented beer made with English floor malts, malted wheat and noble hops. A classic European yeast strain with a subtle yet discernable estery profile is employed. A warmer fermentation, followed by a period of cold conditioning serves to develop and refine this complex beer.

12 oz bottle, via Zathrus13. Pours a cloudy dark amber with lots of tiny particulate floaties. Head was fizzy and fleeting in nature, off-white in color. Nose is malty with alot of fruitiness. Notes of raisons, tobacco, and alcohol. It smells like it has a bit of age on it as well with some sherry notes. Fruity maltiness dominates up front fading to an alcoholic and yeasty finish. Some raison, banana, brown sugar, figs, and light oxidation notes. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with moderate fizzy carbonation. Finishes a little sticky and cloying. Overall, I think that this was a pretty weird one, and I couldn’t really peg a style on it, which is why it’s a Strong Ale I guess. Interesting I guess, but not exactly my bag.

12 oz bottle via slob (thanks!). Dark clear reddish brown pour with almost no head. i hate band aid aroma, but that is what i am getting here. Taste is salty, acidic and then some sour plums. Not very good.

2003 bottle. Pours out a dark brown color with tons of yeast and other shit floating in it. There was a huge cake of yeast left in the bottle that I did not pour into my glass. Big thick tan head masses up on it. Smell is dark fruits, and some sweet malty and hoppy notes. A little sour presence is noted as well. Taste is similar. Not sure if the sour flavor was supposed to be there or not, but it was there, and it enhanced the beer in my opinion. Very nice stuff, but from what I understand alot of these beers were hit or miss, and this was definately a hit, but if you make alot of misses you cant stay in business. Good stuff, shame it isnt made anymore.

Bottle. Pours a very murky brown color with a moderately-sized off-white head. Aroma was on the sweet side - grapes/raisins, caramel and yeast. Flavor is also very sweet - fruity, malty, with some yeast. For an 8.2 abv, it was quite drinkable. Medium body with a moderate mouthfeel.

Pours a dark brown with small floaties and a golden/copper hue when held to the light. Head is average size but a creamy off white and sustained and left lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, hints of caramel, vanilla, toasted malts, nuts and grapes. The aroma kind of reminds me of a Dubbel without the Belgian yeast. Flavor I’m getting some more of the dark fruits, grapes, toasted malts and candi sugar.

After it finished drenching my kitchen, the half a glass I managed to save was a hazy amber color and an off-white head. Aroma and flavor of sour grapes. Not much malt and a very tart bite. Alcohol warmth very noticeable in the finish but not in the taste.

Semi sweet, some spice, vanilla, grapes, slightly tart. ABV was noticed as it warmed, but stayed smooth.
