Commercial Description:
Baltus, a hybrid style, is a top-fermented beer made with English floor malts, malted wheat and noble hops. A classic European yeast strain with a subtle yet discernable estery profile is employed. A warmer fermentation, followed by a period of cold conditioning serves to develop and refine this complex beer.

I had this beer when they 1st started making it and I thought it was sour. Maybe I got a bad bottle. This bottle was good. Brownish red with no head and minimal carbonation. Good aroma of plums, raisins, garpes, and wine. Lots of floaties/Thick, sweet with smooth wine taste. Mild alcohol finish

12oz bottle via trade with Dorwart - Thanks Jason! - Pours dark brown cloudy with not much head to speak of. Light carbonation bubbles rise to the top though. Aromas of raisin, caramel, candi sugar and a touch of yeast. Flavor is raisin, caramel, candi sugar, light yeast. Medium bodied without much carbonation and a lingering sweet finish. Alcohol is covered well. Not too bad..

Poured an amber color. The flavor was quite funky and yeasty with some chocolate, caramel, and other dark fruits maybe raisins? The finish was somewhat sour. Not bad but nothing out of this world either.

via trade with jasonmech77 - Pours a hazy deep amber color with a light tan head. Light spotty lacing. Has a very nice fruity aroma. Flavor is mainly fruit with some noticeable caramel malt flavor. Yeast flavor isn’t heavy. A major plus in my book. A medium to full body beer. Very nice beer. Not over powering. The best Belgium I’ve had so far. Thanks Jason.

Re-rate: Same batch, another year of age. Kriek notes very prevalent, dominate nose…a huge gusher out of the bottle, btw, be lucky if I got five ounces out of it. Notes of alcohol. Weird taste, slightly oxidized but with prunes, figs, and brown sugar coming through under yeast and slightly rough alcohol. Strong tart sour cherry. Surprised at how well this has held up, though I wasn’t a fan in the first…still very drinkable despite the booziness (no burn, though). Medium-light body, bone-dry yeasty aftertaste with yeast and faint tart. It seems all beers have to die (even the Westies won’t hold for 50 yrs, despite the ongoing experiments) and this deserves a small, dutifully tended plot in our memories.

Bottle sampled with Stegosaurus. Pours brown with no head. Aroma is caramel, fruit, and molasses. Flavor is sweet, caramel, alcohol, and fruit. Didn’t think this tasted like a Belgian Strong, and it is just an ok brew.

Pours a murky amber/brown color producing a thin bone-white head. No lacing noted. Nose of earth, spice, dark fruit, yeast, candy sugar and some oxidized wet cardboard notes unfortunately creep in (old bottle I suspect. No dating observed on label). Mouthfeel is a tad syrupy, but smooth with a pleasant, fine carbonation. Somewhat scattered, confused, but interesting flavors of ripe fruits, banana, yeast rolls, roasted malts and plum with a strange underlying tart sourness. Finish a bit quick and fleeting. OK, but one bottle’s enough.

bottle-sampled with Kevin. pours deep brown with a small off-white head. nose is aged malt with dark fruit and sourness. some light wet cardboard in there as well. flavors are sour, malty and lots of dark fruit with oxidization and alcohol in there. some light tingle on the tongue from the alcohol. sourness gets tiresome over time.
