Commercial Description:
Baltus, a hybrid style, is a top-fermented beer made with English floor malts, malted wheat and noble hops. A classic European yeast strain with a subtle yet discernable estery profile is employed. A warmer fermentation, followed by a period of cold conditioning serves to develop and refine this complex beer.

A malty heavyweight porter from Heavyweight. Only criticism is the perhaps a bit to much malt

It was on tap. Nice deep, dark in color with a off white head. Very good beer. Really enjoyable. It has a warming feel to it. It warms you up. Fruity nose.

Yeasts, mustiness, grassy, grainy, sour nose. Fairly complex. Slightly hazy gorgeous garnet-mahogany color with a nice off-white head and nice lacing. Start is sour with raisin hints to start. Inky maltiness to finish. Smoke in the end as well. Pretty interesting and complex beer. I like this a lot.

Deep malty aroma. Chocolate, red wine, plums, light fruity hops. Raisins & tannic yeasts. Huge foamy fluffy off-white lacing head. Copper brown clear. Med heavy watery body. Alcohol taste, sweet like homemade wine. Plums & raisins. Good level of hops giving some acidity and light bitterness. Finish is mild sweet raisins with light nutty bitter after. Enjoyable.

Nice dark and thick, cloudy chestnut brown color with ruby red highlights, I recieved no head with a vigorous pour, puzzling, a small fizzing appeared like a cola and then fizzed away just as fast, leaves limpy fading stringy lace. Smell is faint of sweet malts, somewhat toffeeish and some dark fruityness of plum and banana with a touch dark yeast and of alcohol warmness. Taste is much more complex then what the smell gives, quick dark fruits hinting raisin, plums, and banana enter then fade, rounding into tons of sweetness of toffee and dark caramel malts, lots of malts, but with just the right balance of hop bitterness and dark yeasty hold into the middle right on through to the finish leaving lingering sweetness and warming senses from the 8.2 ABV. Me likey. Feel is pretty full and creamy, getting syrupy close to to the middle where it hits the bittering mildness that finishes a bit lingering in sweet hold and leaves the mouth with a buttery tang. Quite nice. Very good example of the style.

This beer poured into the glass a dark cloudy amber color. The head seemed fairly thick, beige in color but hints of tan were also there. It was about 1" high that lasted about 2 minutes, and it left light lace. The aroma was of malt, hops, sour fruit, some light spices and hints of yeast. The taste started off with a slight roasted wheat malt taste that slid into a sweet/sour hoppy middle that seemed pretty smooth. The end was was yeasty and hoppy. It stayed on the palet until the next sip. I rather enjoyed this beer and will look into getting more of it. Thank You BEERLUVR for sending me this bottle.

Color, a dark, plummy brown, under a fine, creamy head. Aroma: lush and full of fruit, beautiful and deliriously deep, slightly spicy, with further fruity develops, cherries and berries, but burnt. Juicy hops and rich malt jump out through the nose, a perfect barleywine bouquet. This spent considerable time under the olfactory openings. Body is medium, not quite as full as I’d like. Flavor is firmly on the full side, though, bright and beaming with dark, twisted fruit. Long finish, very tasty. My notes on this sampling finished a bit early, perhaps the "mere" 8% ABV had a hand in curtailing further critical reckoning. Nevertheless, my final words penned at this session with this outstanding barleywine were "Yum--I like it..." And, maybe, that’s enough...
