j12601 (1149), Poughkeepsie, New York, USA Oct 31, 2009 Rating number 1100. Bottle at Paul’s place for Kan’s visit, courtesy of Paul himself I believe. 2004 bottling. Pours a just hazy ruby brown with a thin beige head. Bourbon, vanilla, wood, malt, prunes, plum. A bit boozy at first, but smooth and delicious after that. Soft smoke, vanilla, caramel, plums. Finishes sweet with a little lingering prune and caramel. Tasty. WinoInTraining (104), Longmont, Colorado, USA Sep 10, 2009 Damn good. Big rich. Massive flavor. Reminded me of these french caramels you can get that are crusted with sea salt. 2005 btl. too bad these guys went under. daknole (2802), Plantation, Florida, USA Sep 9, 2009 Wow I am so stoked that I got to finally drink this. dmac you are the man! Big time! Pours a nice dark brown with a good brown head. aroma is rich and delicious. I found no oxidation. Tons of vanilla, wood, bourbon, raisins, brown sugar, syrup and some light chocolaty caramel. Flavor is smooth and rich and has held up remarkably well. Bourbon, wet wood, vanilla, brown sugar, spice, raisins...man oh man this one was delicious. boamr (112), Pennsylvania, USA Aug 8, 2009 Huge thanks to richlikebeer on this one. Major gusher. Pours a dark brown color with a huge amount of head. Has an amazing wood, caramel and bourbon smell to it. Taste is about the same and has a very smooth finish to it. This is an amazing beer. To bad they aren’t around anymore Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA Jul 29, 2009 Pours brown with a ruby red hue and a thin ring of bobbles. Smells of dry oak, dark fruit, spice, earthy, vinous. Tastes fruity and sweet with some molasses, oak, some boozy hints. Enjoyable. ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Jul 12, 2009 Random pour at RBSG 2009. Aroma is full with brown apple, flour, brown sugar and light roast. Almost no bourbon left on this thing. Color is a flat reddish brown. Like a cup full of powder or sauce. Flavor is a great example of barleywine: wet wood, caramel and dark malt, just a very slight edge of alcohol holding it all together. Probably just another year before this becomes something to pour on ice cream. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Jul 12, 2009 Bottle 75cl. [ Courtesy of henrikb ]. Clear medium to dark red amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, fruity - berry, tobacco, light notes of chocolate, vanilla and alcohol notes. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, and a light alcoholic finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Aroma and flavor is very nice but something makes it hard to drink ! [20090710] xmarcnolanx (789), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Jun 25, 2009 @DLD
Aroma has bits of cardboard and sherry, some hops, residual sugar, alcohol, and caramel. Nice!
Taste is sweet, slightly bitter (faded hops), some caramel, piny, and floral.
Finish is slightly dry alcohol and hop bite, but is actually full and sticky.
Very nice.
Thanks Walt!
