Commercial Description:
A biere de garde or farmhouse beer. It's brewed exclusively with French pale malt and German hops. A long boil develops a deep amber color and malty complexity. A small amount of black pepper in the boil contributes a subtle spiciness. The beer is fermented with a wonderful monastic lager yeast and the finished beer is bottled-conditioned and packaged in 750 ml. corked bottles. The bottle wears a label of beaux art. It features an image of an abstract painting by Canadian artist: Christine Haley.

2005 Bottle - Thanks SpringsLicker! - Pours a hazy golden with a medium off white head...aroma is gritty grain and yeast, diacetyl that I thought dissipated but others did not...flavour is yeasty and malty, fruit and caramel, very light bitterness...still prickly with carbonation, def a little over the hill, but interesting none the less...

Bottle - thanks to Ditmier. Dirty golden orange with a thin white head. Didn’t know what to expect here after an aroma of candied sugar and popcorn butter... Really it came through just fine. Probably a bit past it’s peak, but here goes: Faded hops, caramel, and more butter. Sneaky smooth, yet retains a nice crispness. Cool.

Bottle shared by Glen. Thanks. Poured a hazy orange yellow golden. Nose of caramel, dark fruits, oxidation, cardboard. Flavor pretty similar. This is on its way out but has held up pretty good for 5 years.

Nice share, Glen! Deep golden orange pour. Thin bubbly white head. Mild caramel and malt. Honey notes. Definite oxidation. Cardboard and rotten apples. Some earthy herb notes. Still not too bad.

Thanks glen for bringing. Pours a cloudy orange amber with a one finger offwhite head. The nose is sweet and malty, mild oxidation, fruity esters. Smooth on the mouth with a nice caramelly profile, mild leafy hop bite. Held up better than some of the Heavyweights.

Bottle at BCTC 2009: Murky bronze golden pour with a dense off white film of head. Slightly oxidized aroma- fruity with some apple skin notes, light caramel sweetness and an herbal note. Silky feel with a fruity bitter flavor balanced by caramel malts. The fruitiness is mainly apple and pear skin with paper character. A bit oxidized and past it’s prime, but interesting and rounded.

Bottle courtesy of Mary (at least I think it was her that brought it) at BCTC. Pours a hazy brownish apricot color with a thin white head. Oxidized heavily, with some caramel backing it up. Flavor follows the aroma, with more oxidization, caramel, and now some plum tones. Not quite what I imagine it once was, but sadly I never got to taste it at it’s prime, so I’ll have to settle for this.
