Commercial Description:
A biere de garde or farmhouse beer. It's brewed exclusively with French pale malt and German hops. A long boil develops a deep amber color and malty complexity. A small amount of black pepper in the boil contributes a subtle spiciness. The beer is fermented with a wonderful monastic lager yeast and the finished beer is bottled-conditioned and packaged in 750 ml. corked bottles. The bottle wears a label of beaux art. It features an image of an abstract painting by Canadian artist: Christine Haley.

Amber in color with the smells of bread and spices.. The taste was very malty and sweet with the spices coming through in the aftertaste. Smooth finish. Very good.

750 ml bottle. I think the bottle was shaken around a lot due to the very cloudy appearance even with a first pour. Nice fluffy off white head and good lace though. Aroma is bready, yeast, pepper and spice, and some light clovey phenols. Flavor is lightly sweet, balanced with spice light fruits, bready and yeasty with a smooth finish. Pretty good overall.

The pour reveals a cloudy amber color with floaties abd a thin white head. Aroma of peaches with bread and malt. Again peaches, bread and malt are felt in the flavor and they are joined by a bit of sweetness. The body has a light to medium thickness with a creamy texture and lively carbonation. It’s good but doesn’t compare to some other bičre de garde like la Bavaisienne or Jolly Pumpkin Bičre de Mars.

Probably the one and only time I’ll get to try this one. Copper colored with a small head. Aroma and flavor were surprisingly fruity with a hint of pepper. Solid beer if not mind blowing.

25 oz bottle. After the classic Heavyweight explosive foaming that spilled several ounces of beer onto my table, the beer pours a dark copper with an orangish hue. A few small chunkies floating around. Enormous bone white head. Aroma is fruity with alot of caramel malt, belgian yeast, and citrus. Not really sure what to think about the flavor, a mix of heavy caramel malts, alcohol, yeast, and dates. Some oxidation creeping in on the finish that was loaded with pepper. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with intense fizzy carbonation. It got really cloying on the finish by the end of the bottle. Overall, this was not a pleasant beer to drink to me. Luckily I didn’t have to drink those few ounces that foamed over.

25.4 oz bottle. Uncapped a well-chilled bottle and watched a dirty white foam rise up the neck and stop just before overflowing. Misty honey orange, silky head. Nose is sticky sweet cantaloupe, cherry Life Savers and musty candied violets. With a few sips sweetness subsides. Taste, however, begins soapy and gently sour apple with moderate carb leading to a dry lemon cookie. A nice session brew without agressive flavors. Likely good with seafood.

2005 Bottle. One year old. Pour is a murky orange/mellon color. Head consists of a nice creamy layer of tiny bubbles and film; an attractive beer. The bottle actually continued to foam over after I poured the first snifter full. Aroma is dry and wheaty with old dried hops. There is also some pepper in the bouque. Flavor is lot more alcoholic then I would have thought. Perhaps 7.7% is a little steep for this beer. I was looking for more of a session ale. This was yeasty, peppery and a little bit of citrus. Decent, but not what I was looking for.
