Commercial Description:
A biere de garde or farmhouse beer. It's brewed exclusively with French pale malt and German hops. A long boil develops a deep amber color and malty complexity. A small amount of black pepper in the boil contributes a subtle spiciness. The beer is fermented with a wonderful monastic lager yeast and the finished beer is bottled-conditioned and packaged in 750 ml. corked bottles. The bottle wears a label of beaux art. It features an image of an abstract painting by Canadian artist: Christine Haley.

Very nice cloudy gold body. Heavy carbonation, be careful when opening bottles of this... they explode. Very complex aroma, fruits, malts, grains all combine. A very nice body. The fruits and malts combine very completely. Nice clean ending.

Thanks, Lou! Mild gusher. Pours a hazy golden color, nice fluffy head that reduces to a nice halo that lends medium lacing. Aroma is very malty, some mild fruitiness, fresh-cut grass, and mild european hops. Flavor is initially citric, giving way to an earthy note, next a warm, tingly malt section, a bit of a sour spell, a long grassy note, mild pepper, and a great dusty, dry finish. Very nice. Perhaps the mildest example in the style I’ve had. I prefer this yeast to thers I’ve had, as it’s not as prominent

Pours a cloudy golden color. Reminds me of a malty triple. Sweet with citrusy tastes. Sugary, caramel mouth feel. My friend Ready likened it to a mixed drink more than a beer.

"At first pour, the smell was awful. Aroma was skunky big time. Apperance was light cloudy brown Medium head with okay lacing. I didn’t pick it up till ealge said it buy falvor was taken over by black pepper with a barnyard flavor. Okay beer."

All the right stuff here, except...Great grainy nose, really malty but grassy too. Funky (cobwebby) but sugary too (especially in the yeast pour). This has all the right flavors; a bit of metallic element to the malt, highly bready and cobwebby, some spalt hops character. Basically the clear pour here s magnificent, but the high alch. and stillness later on with the yeast pour makes it too much. Almost fantastic. Thanks Lou!

Brewery-fresh bottle. Talk about unfiltered! Orange/apricot in color, and murky to the point of opacity. The pour raises some lackluster foam, but the beer itself is completely uncarbonated. Nearly undetectable nose of bubblegum and banana, with an underlying gruyere cheesy/sulfury quality. The flavors are easier to pick out, but equally unpalatable... sweet and sugary, yeasty, diet lemon-lime soda, peach, rubbing alcohol. Bitterness has a saccharine quality. Peculiar mouthfeel is sugary, milk-and-water-y, starchy or pasty... very much like sake. Foul aftertaste completes the picture; mealy, dirty, and alkaline (like a mouthful of wet cement), and the sweet/harsh bite of grain alcohol. Unbelievable that such an obviously flawed product was hoisted off on the consumer. I have never had a beer that was awful on so many levels!

750ml bottle, sampled along a nice juicy steak. Pours with a fabulous head and a completely opaque mauve body, almost like a glass full of custard. Aroma is very powerful, extremely fruity (pear and green grape) with some perfect greek olive scent. Firm, balanced flavor has hints of sour fruit, watermelon and pear, gentle spice (cilantro perhaps), a touch of acidity and a nice though subtle citrus kick. Finish is caramelly but quickly diminishing. A very nice beer.

750ml bottle. Orange/amber color with fluffy white head, highly carbonated, and lots of sediment. Nose of citrus, grass, sweetish caramel malt, grassy hops, and some tangy, yeasty funk. Flavor pretty well follows, though as the beer warms, a grapefruit hop flavor emerges and becomes prominent-- an interesting surprise. Very nice carbonation and creamy, full mouthfeel. I had never bought this because of the non-descript label (what the hell is art beer?) and am now kicking myself. I really enjoyed this one, great stuff!
