Commercial Description:
A biere de garde or farmhouse beer. It's brewed exclusively with French pale malt and German hops. A long boil develops a deep amber color and malty complexity. A small amount of black pepper in the boil contributes a subtle spiciness. The beer is fermented with a wonderful monastic lager yeast and the finished beer is bottled-conditioned and packaged in 750 ml. corked bottles. The bottle wears a label of beaux art. It features an image of an abstract painting by Canadian artist: Christine Haley.

Bottle: Aroma is lightly sweet and has some light Euro-lager aromas lingering in the background. Pours a hazy orangish-yellow. Lightly sweet up front with a little banana with a light hop and even lighter sweet smoke flavor in the finish. Thanks to Eyedrinkale for this one.

Had this a second time courtesy of Styles. Much different than my previous notes indicate. Aroma has lots of citrus, orange peel, yeast, and spice. Pours a cloudy yellowish-orange with a small white head. Lots of sweet orange up front with a touch of orange peel. Finishes lightly yeasty with a hint of spice. Better than my initial score of 6-3-7-3-14.

A nice biere de garde, a bit too peppery for my taste, but still very enjoyable. Pours mahogany with a medium white head that quickly fades. Aroma has a ton of pepper alongside a subtle malt base. No hops really tasted, although thats good for the style. This was just to overpowered by the pepper, giving it a very dry feeling.

Thanks Cornboy for this one...a very nice surprise. Pours a slightly cloudy amber-gold hue. A nice frothy, very light, big bubbled head is present, but diminishes quickly. The aroma is more or less yeasty with malty hints. The flavor is nicely hopped, slightly bitter---and good. Well-balanced with lotsa peppery spice and citrus. As it warms that spiciness really comes out large. Almost cloyingingly astringent. Nice mouthfeel...good carbonation. The finish is quite astringent. I figured I’d like this, but not as much as I did. I’ve not tried many "farmhouse" beers so it’s a real treat to be introduced with this one.

From a 750 into a Duvel Tulip. Pure gold in color, with a noble hop aroma. Nice bitter aftertaste and finish. Spices, yeast, and herbs, all work in harmony in this subtle and outstanding farmhouse brew. Thanks Jon.

Cloudy yellow, with a large white head. Slightly sour, fruity aroma. Medium to heavy body, taste is spice and malt, and some cider-like flavors as well. This may also be the only beer I’ve had so far where the alcohol seems stronger than the the percentage suggests. Interesting and different. Not a favorite style of mine, but a nice change of pace.

My first of the style. Amber in the glass with a fragrant aroma upon opening the bottle. Flavor is a bit yeasty with fruit and spiciness. Very interesting and enjoyable.

This beer is incredibly well carbonated, it is slowly climbing its way out of the bottle eve after pouring out half the bottle. The beer is a hazy orange-amber color, and is topped by a frothy light tan head. The aroma is a mixture of spice and fruit, with notes of apple being prominent, as well as subtle notes of ginger, prune, and a meaty maltiness.

The beer is quite spritzy and is light on the palate. It is lightly sweet with a certain mustiness to it, and even something that seems like it is oxidized a bit. The oxidation fits in well though, and picks up the maltiness in a way. The fruitiness from the aroma is not quite as prominent in the aroma. There are hints of cider, raisin, and plum. There is also a bit of alcohol in the finish as well as a fair amount of bitterness that helps to balance out the fruity and malty notes.

This is pretty tasty, though it is not quite sharp enough for my palate. With the prominent maltiness it would make a good example of a Bier De Garde, which perhaps it is.
