fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Nov 18, 2008 Lightly smoky on the flavor. The aroma was more roasty. Some dusty lager twang brought it down a bit. Just OKAY WeeHeavySD (2932), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Jun 25, 2008 750ml bottle via trade. Shared with My GF Cyn, Bikesandbeer, and his GF Jessi @ San Diego Veledrome Bike Races. Poured dark blackish red/brown with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is sweet with dark malts and a touch of smoke. Taste is really really nice and sweet with a bit of licorice. Great Bew. Firemoose15 (540), Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 31, 2008 Bottle courtesy of Dorwart..a huge thanks!!!
Aroma nice roasty profile of malts and some coccoa. Poured a nice dark black cherry. Flavor was nicely roasty, smoke and some coffeeish notes. Palate was nice and light and lively. Just great stuff. Immy (1912), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Mar 8, 2008 Capped 750 from Ty5592 - Thanks! Appears black at first, but raising it to the light shows a deep, brilliant mahogany red. A dense, beige head lasts to the final drop. Beautiful nose, mild baking chocolate, a bit of coffee, nicely roasty. Roasty flavor, chocolate, coffee, charcoal, some light nuttiness and a wisp of smoke. Light body that never feels thin, perfectly carbonated. Dreamy stuff... excellent. JCB (1713), Durham, North Carolina, USA Feb 13, 2008 750 from HimerMan - thanks Brian!! I’ve been wanting to try this for some time and it doesn’t disappoint. A big dark amber pour, glistening with hints of ruby and topped by a lustrous head (but not a HW gusher!). Nice faintly chocolate aroma, which translates into the taste, capped off by some slightly dry qualities that give it a nice bitter finish. Fine stuff. adrian910ss (1394), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 15, 2008 750 ml bottle. Pours a dark mahogany with a large foamy beige head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, and tea. Taste is malty with a presence of herbal tea and a hint of baking chocolate. Very nice. Has held up well. JoeMcPhee (4893), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Jan 14, 2008 Tap at the Gate. Black colour with rich garnet highlights. Aroma is loaded with cold coffeeish notes. A bit of light chocolate and some salty roastiness. Flavour is quite light, with a touch of herbal/leafy hoppiness over coffee and a bit of chocolate. The palate is fairly thin but with a good creaminess in spite of that. Nutty character retronasally. Flinty bitterness. More of a dry stout than a schwarzbier, but tasty nonetheless. michael-pollack (2598), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 8, 2008 750ml Bottle: Sweet malty aroma. Smells of malts, coffee, roasting, chocolate, funk, blue cheese, and butterscotch. Poured dark brown with a hint of ruby in color and a medium-sized tan head that diminished quickly. Clear. Sparkling. Lightly sweet flavor. Tastes of chocolate, coffee, malts, roasting, and a little tobacco. Medium body. Tingly, watery texture. Average to lively carbonation. Sweet, coffee finish.
