| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 5, 2007 Bottle shared with Lukin. Rating is unfortunately from memory. Pour was real pretty, with a thick, dense foam cap. The beer was mostly brown. Roasty and dry, slightly vegetal aroma. Kind of raw, unrefined (unsurprisingly). A bit thin in the taste, and not very much to style... at least based on the german schwarzs I’ve had. I would’ve liked to taste this next a Perkunos. SpringsLicker (2043), Tennessee, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 30, 2007 Thanks to kp? for bringing this one to share at the pre Cask Ale tasting.
This retired Heavyweight pours a dark clear brown with a thin head.
Toasty malt aroma.
Some diacetyl and a touch of tartness are perhaps signs that this is getting past it’s prime, but it is still a very smooth and drinkable beer at this point, though perhaps the flavor changes that occurred with the sample I had have shifted this away from what I look for in a good representative of the Schwarzbier style. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 29, 2007 Deep garnet red with medium off white head. Roasted malt aroma, chocolaty, thinnish palate, true to style. Roasty, chocolate goodness. Very nice to drink, maybe a hint of smoke. I really enjoyed this. aracauna (2391), Georgia, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Jan 27, 2007 Dark brown with little head. The aroma has a decent roast, but everything is a little ruined by the diacetyl. Not quite a diacetyl bomb, but I’m not big on this beer because of it. OhioDad (2491), Hilliard, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 3, 2007 750ml bottle via trade with WillBlake! - Thanks! - Pours very dark brown with a big creamy tan head that stays well and laces the sides of the lager glass. Aromas of chocolate, caramel, even a little toffee. Flavor is lots of chocolate, caramel, a little smoke, lots of nuts, and some light roasted malt. Palate is lighter than a porter and a tad more watery but it is quite porterlike in the mouth with good carbonation and a nice creamy mouthfeel. I liked this pretty well Dickinsonbeer (3499), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 1, 2007 750 ml bottle. Pours a nice deep dark woody brown, almost black with lots of nice bright clear amber highlights on the edge with a vigorous fluffy beige head and some lacing. Aroma is full of nice toasted malts, very slight on the diacetyl which was a relief, after hearing about other bottles with this problem. Lots of nice sweet toffee and caramel as well in the aroma. Flavor is chocolatey, with some dry nuttiness on the palate, light sweet caramel and toasted malts, and finishes almost abruptly and leaves almost no aftertaste. Very light, dry, and mineral-like in the end. Pretty decent schwartz. Cornboy (417), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 1, 2006 Poured dark brown, low carbonation. Picked up hints of smoke, caramel, and a bit of diacetyl.
This tastes much different than the last bottle, hope the rest are more like the first one I tried.
Still, overall a good beer.
