Big and dark tropical fruit enduced nose with a ton of ripe raisin, plummy rummy tangyness, currants, dates, and molasses are all engulfed over one smoothly applied chocolate coffee expresso sifting underneath. As it warmed it picked up tiny notes of chewing tobacco spice and began to become more vineous in character with its raisiny currant tang. One bold and beautiful nose to behold.
Color is dark murken black with semi amber slivers at the edges and bottom. Small and compact light brown bubbly foam. Cap leaves quickly to nothing left but a few bubbles and no lacing. Oily residue partially coats the glass.
Taste is all about the dark fruity malt loaded tang and subsequent after effects of roasted stuff. Smooth and quite silky to begin as the ride starts immediately with the currants and raisins. Big and thick Baltic Porter-like tangy maltedness. Melds into a mixing pot of other dark fruits adding plum, dates, and cherry along with dark burntish molasses. Rides out softly into a fine and easy tone of roasty hopified bitterness, chocolate, and expresso. Slight oily burntness remains as loads of tang is left on the tongue and some slight alcoholic heat begins to radiate in the throat where the roasty bitterness fades off. Comes across nearly port-like and vineous in some sips. Akin to a J.W. Lee’s, just take out the tobacco of one of those and this is pretty damn close to what you’d get. Lots of complexity, character, layers, and warmth.
Feel is all about the silky heft with this stuff. Tangy big malts to start, builds gracefully into a warmer, roastier, burnt-like finish. Wowza-wow, big time smoOOth... full body. Not so much creamy as it is a silken, lightly velvety, semi syrupy, and oily coating richness without any sticky/cloying stuff. Miraculously Smooth and Full. Delightfully Soothing and Warm.

Poured a deep dark black with a creamy tan head. Nose is mildly sweet malty, some choco-malts come out as does some weak fruits. The flavor is very roasty with caramel and coffee notes dominant...all the way to a smoky choco flavor...very nice. Full bodied, creamy with a little alcohol kick in the end....very very tasty. Great IS. Lizabeth (360), east falmouth, Massachusetts, USA

This is my last bottle of the love that is B.O.R.I.S. I sent most of my bottles away. In fact, I din’t know I had this one. Black pour with silly, typical HW monster head is dark brown like chocolate whipped cream. Aromas are deep, coffee, chocolate kisses, creamy, almost unreal like a coffeemate creamer. So inviting. Palate is unctuous; it coats the glass and the gullet. My teeth even feel a bit sticky after swishing. Outstanding! Dark fruit flavors off the bat with a serious burst of coffee, chocolate, coffee, and burnt chococoffee. Some Heavyweight sourness comes in as a signature. Tends towards bitter as it finishes but steps back and lets in a full dose of fruit and cheese plate, barnyard, sage, fig, cooked prune -- then back to earth, and I mean earthy to finish. Bitter, rough, and salt in the end. Bitter finish is oily like old coffee. Please Tom, make more of this great brew! Silphium (2138), Haslett, Michigan, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Feb 1, 2005 The last of my Secret Santa beers which makes this #12. Many thanks to Jason (Dorwart) for the taste of the East Coast! Deep opaque brown body, medium tan/ochre head. Light lacing. Rich aroma of coffee, dark rich roast, molasses, a touch of vanilla, and chocolate. I could smell this without drinking it for some time. Rather delicately rich body, with emphasis on chocolate, molasses and a slight tart dark fruit kick before opening up to become more Baltic Porter-ish with smoked flavors, toast, and herbal hops. Very oily and a bit salty/leathery on the finish, yet delicate and velvety throughout. Classy and delicious. badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jan 31, 2005 Permeable black with ruby gleams. Beige foam of silky consistency. Elegant malt nose of soft roast, milk chocolate, and port. Understatedly airy and pruny. Soft and creamily full. Impeccably conditioned, which allows for a seamless fusion of buttery-soft caramel and smoked black chocolate to grab foothold. Multilayered and lushly full with caramel and espresso swirled with oily coffee beans that lessen the graininess of the alcohol. Soft bedding of roasted grains possesses some deeper scratchiness, as well. Tardy, but bracing, black malt snap lends a distinct edge of tingly-sharp acidity to the flavor, as well as some chalky dryness, which sparks a palpable earthy hop onset. Closes gracefully rich without showing a hint of char, and mistily dry, with cocoa, piecrust, and moist fudge cake nuances. This is a gem among many, many stones, as it derives its complexity from a vast array of subtleties, rather than redundantly bowling you over with one-dimensional brutishness. Very traditional version, which is quite refreshing, particularly in a land where far too many average and overdone Imperials are deemed superior. Lubiere (4546), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
