Smells a lot like the New Glarus Sour Brown but with a sharp herbal hop note. Same sour browness in the flavor but with pale malt, herbal hosp, and a lactic acid bitterness. A well-made beer with a nice interplay between the light malt and sharp hops. Thanks Facto for the bottle! 1FastSTi (2580), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 4, 2005 Frothy off-white head that dies down fairly fast. Rich opaque brown head. Can see the carbonation. The aroma is sour, slight horse blanket, very sour fruitiness, toblerone candy. A little weak in aroma. The flavor is light raw grains, full of herbal hops. Almost a strawberry hop flavor. Balanced sourness. Was hoping it’s more sour. The palate is sweet, sour, light to medium body. Good carbonation. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | May 3, 2005 (750 ml bottle: Shared by SDbruboy at O’Brien’s, thanks Cliff!) Wow, this is one of the most unique beers I’ve ever tasted. I’m not even sure what words to use to describe the nose and flavor, so I’ll put that off for last. Pours a medium brown color, fully cloudy in appearance. Light tan head is very active on the pour, but fades to a halo soon after. The words that come to mind when I smell this beer are funk, cheese, barnyard and sour. I’m sure there are better ways to describe the nose, but I just can’t place many of the aromas. It’s just not something you smell every day when you live at the beach. The flavor is funky, sour, and acidic. Kind of reminds me of Champagne in a way. Light grapefruit, and mild dark malts. The finish fades off a bit and is a bit weak. Clean, lightly zesty palate. I need to drink more of these types of beers to get better at identifying these unusual flavors. Look forward to trying this beer again at a later date and maybe I’ll appreciate it more. BBB63 (4267), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 2, 2005 Murky brown with a huge overcarbonated head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of sour apple, apricot, banana, floral hops, toasted malt, and quite earthy yeast esters. The taste start with sweet and sour fruit notes with an undertone of malts. The finish is a touch yeasty and a hint of nutty quality. The feel is quite lively and a bit chalky. Good brew once you can pour it. Frank (1068), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 2, 2005 Cloudy brown. Big pineapple and mango aroma. Light bodied and quite dry. Yeasty and slightly tart. A very enjoyable brew made with an interesting twist. Terminus (1955), Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 29, 2005 Sampled at ratebeer party... thanks! Pours cloudy with a nice brown color. The taste hits you as sour at first and becomes more fruit and spice. Then the yeast takes hold and makes this a champagne like drink. Sip slow and enjoy! SDbruboy (1832), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 23, 2005 Bottle - thanks to Eyedrinkale for the trade. Pours a murky reddish brown color - almost opaque - with a small beigey head. Unique aroma, lots of soured fruit and funkiness, evidence of the wild yeast and dry champagne and geuze notes along with the infamous horse blanket smell. Flavor is also of soured dark fruits, dry and vinious, oak and musty funk. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Unlike DaSilky1, this is not my favorite style, so I’ve got to give it props for complexity, but I won’t go seeking it out for a session ale. DaSilky1 (2016), San Diego, California, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 22, 2005 This beer reminded me of a couple things. First and foremost, it reminded me of one of my all time favorite ales: Burton Bridge Old Expensive...Furthermore, it reminded me of Pizza Port Mo Betta Bretta with a little more caramel maltiness behind the brett. Anyway, it poured a cloudy, almost muddy reddish brown color with a solid tan head. Aroma was a work of art...streams of funk, sourness, gueuze, nuts, aerosol, cherry, magic marker, and a hint of concentrated grape juice laced with toberlone chocolate. Flavors combined viniously with enough cheesey funk and chocolate nut flavors to keep me grinning. Some cherries, oak accents, and astringent tanginess follow...Amazingly complex for 5%..and I mean amazing! This is the epitome of complex session ale. No doubt about it. This is my style and its not appreciated by most, and i don’t give a damn.
