I had to have a few of these to get a good grip on it and I finally did. I love smoke beers and although the smoke isn’t overpowering like most, this is more drinkable than the others. More white ash than anything. Loved it. LordHedgehog (144), Westminster, Maryland, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 5/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 10/20 | May 19, 2004 Aroma is of elderberries and engine oil. The flavor tastes more of cigarette smoke than wood or stone smoke. Rouch, yet buttery, with hints of berries. I found it offsetting and unpleasant. Shadrach (176), Brooklyn, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 15, 2004 Poured with a lot of head which eventually disappated, a tannish opaque coloring. Aroma was malty and spice. Taste had malts, some spice and a little bit of hops with more spice kicking in later and some malt in the aftertaste. Ungstrup (15420), Frederiksberg, Denmark
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 6, 2004 An unclear red beer with a small disappearing orange head. The aroma is of smoke, wood, peat, and rope - a great aroma. The flavor is very dry and yet sweet with notes of smoke, rope, peat, and hints of lemon. The alcohol runs over the tongue. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 29, 2004 Equipment: 12 oz bottle served chilled in a pint glass.
Appearance: Cloudy reddish orance with visible carbonation. An explosive and excessive yellowish head of tiny bubbles gushed forth on an easy pour. A small, but thick, layer of foam remained all throughout consumption and left some decent sheets of lacing on the glass.
Aroma: Compared to Schenkerla’s urbock, not quite as smoky, but this is definitely the smokiest smelling domestically produced rauchbier I’ve ever come across. Not so overwhelmingly meaty either, but a nice balance between caramel malts, smoked meats, and ash is achieved.
Flavor: An initial taste of sweet sweet caramel malts followed by some soft, but prominent, smoky aftertastes. A tad yeasty, to boot. Again, not as over the top as Schenkerla, but I’m not complaining.
Palate: Medium bodied with very crisp flavors, quite excellent.
Overall: Great food beer. The best domestic rauchbier I’ve had the pleasure of tasting. I wish some brewery in my area would be willing to make one, but the market for this sort of beer is small. Big thanks to my girlfriend for picking this up for me in NYC.
Other: Is it me, or is that goat smoking a fatty? It sure looks like a doobie argo0 (6998), Washington DC, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 25, 2004 99.9% off-white foam on the pour, but eventually it recedes enough to yield a clear golden-orange body. Aroma is mild sweet, orange, medium smoke. At first, taste is medium sweet, orange, very mild smoke at the finish. As it warms, smoke becomes much more pronounced, and caramel also appears. Medium body that hides the alcohol well. Eirikur (301), Alftanes, Iceland
