Curious as to what this tasted like a year ago as the oxidation was just starting to take over. Great time for Ughsmash to pop this one open. For a "simple" brown ale this had some very nice malt complexity and decent balance to it. Although, I agree with Jason that this had a bit too much CO2. Very enjoyable! Poured clear medium brown with a towering initial cap of beige head.. settled down to a thin layer after a few minutes. Aroma picked up some earthy notes with chocolate and caramel beneath.. some oxidation, some oaky notes, and some underlying booziness.. quite complex and enjoyable. Flavor picked up dry chocolate and tobacco notes at the core with toasted biscuits, some grape skins, and mild oxidation notes.. dry chocolatey finish.. very tasty. Light-medium bodied with mild coffee bitterness.. carbonation was a touch too high. Nice one! pineypower (1107), Pine Barrens, New Jersey, USA

Almost a year since HW closed (RIP Heavyweight) I had to try this again Pours out a light-medium brown with a moderate white head, still a bit of carbonation of course not as much as the first time I had it. Aroma of milk chocolate, old coffee and some nuts. Taste is complex, light coffee, nuts, caramel and some light milk chocolate. Solid maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

This beer is ridiculously carbonated; I end up with a four-finger thick head, despite the most careful of pours). It did not gush out at all though. The head is a billowing, fluffy, cragmired texture and it leaves a nice lacing pattern on the sides of my glass. The beer is brilliantly clear, with a dark, ruby-red color that has mad streaming bubbles flowing up through it. This beer is really profoundly aromatic; the nose has notes of biscuits and freshly crushed malt; wheat thins are exactly what I smell as are other notes that remind me of cereal. Hints of tart plums and raisins are noticeable underneath the malt / grain character. The aroma is also spicy (leaning to desert variety spices) with notes of clove, allspice and even a hint of something musty.
The taste is lightly sweet with caramelized malt sugars being quite noticeable. The finish though has that wheat-thin like grain character; these notes are not as pronounced as they were in the nose, but they are still quite noticeable. This grain character is not a typical malt flavor, but is instead a grain focused character that plays the leading role in this beer. This is really quite nice. The finish is a mix of cereal grains, a touch of bitterness and perhaps a hint of fruit character that leans towards tart. A subtle tart plum note is actually found here, it is joined by a touch of raisin flavors; actually the plum note is a mix of tart and sweet plum characters.
This is very quaffable with a medium mouthfeel. On the second pour I am able to retain a bit more of the carbonation which was so forcefully expelled during the first pour; this actually accentuates the tartness a bit more. This beer, while certainly over carbonated, is still doing quite well. This is a really tasty brew. awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | May 20, 2007 From a 750mL Bottle. Obtained in a trade with hopdog. Thanks, Steve! Light brown, hazy color with a tall layer of extremely tall soapy, off-white head. Aroma of toasted almonds and lots of roasted puffed barley cereal. Some hickory smoke and baked oatmeal going on as well. A light, chewy caramel plume rises, dusted with some sea salt. Musky, earthy coconut husks with a splash of vanilla. Excellent complexity. Light bodied, heavily carbonated mouthfeel. Too much carbonation at this point sizzles across the palate. If the carbonation was more restrained, the flavors might even be more impressive than they already are. Lots of toasted oatmeal and a flurry of coconut husks warms the palate, spiced by a hint of mace and woody silver maple bark. Finish is long and drawn out, bringing some light roast coffee and dry baker’s chocolate forward. Nutty, chocolatey, earthy, musky, smokey - delicious.
