The beer pours to a nice glowing hazy reddish brown body with a lasting light beige head. The aroma is definitely smoked with lots of bacon, walnuts, and hazelnuts. The flavor is quite nutty with some smokey apples going on. Rich. Some walnuts, peanuts, hazelnuts. Nice medium bodied palate with a good lingering nutty characteristic. Quite possibly the best "brown ale"/rauchbier. Really darn good. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 26, 2006 Fairly large frothy darkish off-white head. Rusty brown body. Aroma is smokey musty malty coffee. Smoke is dirty... like cigarette hints. Flavor is more of that. Dry thin coffee, odd astringents malty nuts and occaisional banana nut bread. Also reminiscent of dirty public transit... like NYC subway or Chicago El. Its an interesting and good brown indeed, but not my cup of tea overall. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 26, 2006 Bottle. Slightly hazy brown body under a thick tan head - overly carbonated. Nutty aroma - walnut with a hazlenut accent, and a toasty malt backing. The flavor has a pleasant chocolate-covered coffee bean thing with a nutty-dry finish. If it had a bit more residual sweetness it would be that much more enjoyable. Still, the lingering chocolate flavor is quite nice. IrishBoy (2711), Bakersfield, California, USA

Soft carbonation. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. Medium bodied ale that starts dry with chocolate/almond/roasted malt, almost porter-like in character. Finished dry with light toasted almond flavor fade. An enjoyable quaffable beer, especially the nutty almond flavor Too bad this interesting beer will not be produced any longer, now that Heavyweight brewery is gone. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 24, 2006 Courtesy to theeppeeist for sending this 750 out to me. No lack of carbonation in this bottle. It opens with the sound of a bottle rocket launching and poured four fingers of foam initially. Aroma is a boozy accented dark malt smell that invokes Irish Coffee comparisons. It smells strongly of spiked coffee in fact.
The body is a very pale orange tinted brown and as I mentioned the head is riotous and reminds me of Belgian attempts at stouts and English Brown ales.
Fore has more of the spiked coffee notes...not hot, just boozy tasting but with a light feel on the tongue like watered down espresso and cream.
Some chocolate notes develop, but it’s hard to mark the start of those and the end of the coffee notes.
Finish is perfumey with alcohol and coffee and leaves that tongue coating spiked coffee flavor on the tongue for ages.
This is a very different sort of brown ale....if you are looking for esters and nuttiness you’ll be disappointed, but if you like concentrated flavor that doesn’t get syrupy and you can deal with 4 inches of head there is a damn tasty beer waiting for you here. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Sep 23, 2006 Bottle: Courtesy of Styles. Aroma is loaded with roasted nuttiness with a hint of chocolate. Pours a hazy orangish-brown with a big off-white head that lasts a minute or so. Huge roasted nut flavor throughout. There’s a slight hint of caramel and chocolate in the finish, but the nuttiness just dominates and is a little over the top for me. Without a doubt the nuttiest tasting beer I’ve ever had.
