| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 8, 2006 Draft at DRE event. Dark copper pour with minimal head. Aroma of bready rye malt, cacao, some caramel. The flavor was caramel malty, but not swet, with notes of tannins and ESB bitter hints. As it warms, it gets rye breadier. goldtwins (4084), Nesconset, New York, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Aug 6, 2006 Foamed out of the bottle. Poured a clear amber-brown color with a large off-white head. The aroma had notes of chocolate, peanuts, cookies/biscuits, and tobacco. It smells like the cereal sugar smacks. I wasn’t sure what the style was suposed to be but the aroma had some complexity. The flavor was of chocolate and malt. Mildly sweet. The mouthfeel was way too fizzy with a bitter dry finish. Also some tartness on the finish. Walt (2289), Chicago, Illinois, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 25, 2006 BCTC 06- prefest. Bottle. This is more of a cross of a porter and brown ale. Pours a deep brown, slight haze and a nice beige head but fades a bit. Huge thick roasty caramel and chocolate aroma hits hard at first then subsides and blends with a bit of butterscotch - which works very well in this beer and is not overpowering at all. Roasted nuts, toffee, and dark chocolate in the aroma and flavor. Slight fruitiness of raisin in the flavor, more sweet malts, and a decent bitterness in the end for balance. This is a really full bodied and full flavored Brown ale, that is realy too good to be considered a brown ale. Unique for sure. Well Made- thanks Doug! Dorwart (1825), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 14, 2006 Thin sudsy head. Light carbonation. Big roasty aroma. Lots of roasted grains and nuts. Quite yummy. A little weak coffee in there also. Color is a dark mahagony brown. More roasted grains and coffee in the flavor. Sometimes when there is a lot of roastyness in a brew there can be a harsh bitterness which accompanies it. Not so with this brew. Quite strong but not overwhelming. Finish is roasty and dry. Quite the good brown ale. freekyp (902), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 8, 2006 Let the Red Coats come and try to take this beer from us. We will fight for our beerdependence wholeheartedly whilst clutching a Doug’s Colonial Ale. Tis the over-the-top black coffee aroma and flavor that sets this brew apart from lesser brown ales. Tis the nutty rounded flavor that ends so dry and compelling that makes us take up arms against those who would bind us to weak watery suds. And, alas, the burnished cloudy bronze color topped so majestically with its ample foamy brown head. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA

Taste has a lot of coffee in it as well as the flavors already mentioned. Sort of on the sweet side but really nice. And now it’s gone, ugghh.
