Commercial Description:
Lunacy is brewed exclusively with Belgian Pilsner malt, Styrian and English Goldings hops and freshly ground coriander. It begins its life with a long patient boil and is cast into the fermenter at 17.5 P. It then undergoes a vigorous fermentation and extended cold conditioning. After bottling, the beer receives an additional 2 week warm rest before it is released. This yields a surprisingly refreshing brew with spicy notes, sweet malt and subtle fruit.

Bottle aged 1 year. Awesome head on it that reminded me of chouffe houblon. Dies rather quickly but stays at a thin line leaving a nice ring. Very spicy flavor. Smooth and well balanced with slight alcohol presence. Good ale that will age well in another year or two.

Full bodied Pils. Light on the aroma. Beautiful light cloudy amber. It throws of a nice amount of sediment. Flavor is substantial - I’m not always a big fan of the bitter of hops, but in this beer it is tempered beautifully with a slight roasted flavor. Lingers on the palate. Refreshing and robust at the same time. Hope they bring it back.

12 oz bottle. Cloudy cider with a small off-white head. Candy apples and caramel popcorn. Reminds me of the Ocean City boardwalk. You can tell it’s going to be sticky. Smooth, medium body that hints at a barleywine before strawberry rhubarb pie. Milky; burnt on the edges.

Bottle. Pretty weak, average, light Belgian ale w/ no characteristics that really stand out.

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy straw gold colored body under a rather small (for Heavyweight at least) white fizzy head that faded to a thin film. Aroma is very sweet and intensly fruity with a good dose of alcohol. Notes of apple cider, pear, and yeast. Flavor is fruity as well with a large sweet malt presence up front fading to an alcoholic and yeasty finish. Mouthfeel is full bodied and thick with a chewy texture and just enough fizzy carbonation to keep it from getting too cloying and sticky. Overall, this is a decent attempt at cloning Duvel, but not quite as clean and crisp as the original.

I’m beginning to think that Belgian trippels must be relatively easy to make, since so many American brewers are having success with this style now. This one is a cloudy yellow pour with almost no head; the head vanished almost immediately, with almost no lacing as I worked through the beer. Nose of alcohol, floral hops, and sweetness. Taste of sweet malt, yeast and bread like a Belgian, nice hopping, lemon zest, and a yeasty Belgian finish. I find the yeasty style of a trippel tiresome after a while, but this is a good example of the American copies.

Off-white head with excellent lacing (second pour was less impressive); slightly-clouded golden color, with whiteness around the edges. Plenty of alcohol in the nose; candy sugar, spicy and floral. Excellent crisp, small-bubbled carbonation on the tongue, with a firm malt background, showing maple syrup, slight cloves, and perhaps a bit of citrus. Long, malt- and sugar-dominated finish; coriander shows itself clearly at the end. Seems to have an affinity towards wit-style.
