Commercial Description:
Lunacy is brewed exclusively with Belgian Pilsner malt, Styrian and English Goldings hops and freshly ground coriander. It begins its life with a long patient boil and is cast into the fermenter at 17.5 P. It then undergoes a vigorous fermentation and extended cold conditioning. After bottling, the beer receives an additional 2 week warm rest before it is released. This yields a surprisingly refreshing brew with spicy notes, sweet malt and subtle fruit.

NOTE: All bottles in my sampler case developed visible bacteria colonies shortly after purchase. Beers were replaced with brewery-fresh beer courtesy of Heavyweight. New rating: massive lees in the bottle. Pours hazy school bus yellow with lazy bubbles and a thin film of foam.Outrageous fruity nose sports intense grape, watermelon schnapps, Dr Pepper, yeast. The bubblegum aroma that is so prevalent in heavyweight beers is actually appropriate for once. A whirlwind of spicy and soft yeast flavors fill the mouth, with clove, nutmeg, apricot, and strawberry in supporting roles. Low carbonation. The medium body is thicker than excpected, and creamy. Aftertaste is so peppery and spicy that it playfully stings the tongue. Alcohol flavors are well integrated instead of blatant. Needs more bubbles; otherwise a fine brew. * * * Original rating follows; numbers 7, 3, 5, 2, 13, 3.0.*** Hazy apricot in the glass, with few bubbles. The small head, like a dusting of snow, is nonetheless long-lasting. Average lacing. Promising "Belgian" nose of yeast, candied lemon peel, horse urine/barnyard, musty and earthy scents, and gingerbread spice. The flavor is fruity and spicy- cantaloupe and mustard seeds(?)- and metallic. Lacks depth. Thin, dry palate with a yeasty aftertaste. Strong start, bland finish.

Pours a slightly hazy golden with a small white fluffy head. Aroma of Belgian spices, banana, yeast and lemon. Flavor is similar with maybe some lemon/citrus coming through. Taste and smell is a bit like Triple to me. Decent Belgian style ale.

The second I opened the bottle beer came out - wayy too much carbonation. When I pour it the beer made a cloudy dark golden body yet only made a small head. Go figure. Aroma is extremely spicy with banana, yeast, alcochol, lighter fruits like peaches, citrus, and pepper. Flavor is bitter and alcoholic peppery with spices galore. Reminded me a bit of Orval, and interestingly that’s the glass I used for this one.

Cloudy orange with medium white head. Fairly deep orange. Sharp yeast and spices are the initial aroma. Coriander is obvious and there is also a medecinal orange aroma, but suprisingly, this doesn’t seem off putting when taking it as part of the wholel aroma. Light body presents a nice sweet character. Yeast and coriander are quite nice and there is a hint of a warming alcohol in with the sweet malt. Probably a little too much spice (coriander) to achieve the perfect balance, but it is still a prety good beer.

Odd description but this beer pours an orangy copper color with a nice medium white head. Later the color seems to have morphed into a dark golden color. The nose is yeast, spice, malt, and alcohol. The flavors are a mish mash of spice, yeast, sweet malt, and then a body slam of alcohol in the finish. It’s medium bodied but watery and has no real structure to it’s flavors. Elements of a belgian ale are here but this one needs more work.

Poured golden with a thick white head. The head had quite a bit of foam. Aroma is fruity with lemon, banana, coriander and citrus. Some wheat as well. The taste reminded me of the Pranqster. The palate was well balanced and the alcohol was hidden very well.

Bottle from Lou18. Pours a hazy, medium golden colr with a long-lived white head and fantastic lacing. Aroma is very sweet and fruity. Light notes of coriander blend in nicely. Light bodied with a pleasant, gentle carbonation. Flavors run sweet and spicey. Little bits of residual sugar and coriander blend quite well and make this a easy going Belgian. Very good.

Out of a bottle. Aroma is all spice, corriander and pepper combined with some citric notes. Poured a hazy orangish copper with a pillowy head than encircled the glass nicely. Flavor was intersting corriander, pepper and lemon. Palate was definitely chewy and full. Overall decent.
