Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Vintage 2004. Very unclear amber golden with an off-white head. Clean caramel aroma. Solid body with lots of sweet caramel malt - extremely sweet actually. I miss some hops here for balance. 191206

Bottle. Cloudy amber colour with a nice light brown head. Very nice aroma of heavy malt, caramel and hints of alcohol. Flavour of sweet malt combined with a alcoholic touch. Ends up very sweet and with a litte bitter finish.

2003 bottle that I obtained from Frumpty about 6 months ago. Pours out a dark brown color with no head at all. Smell is sweet, dark fruits, malts, and a little bit of hops. Taste is sweet and rich, with a slight lingering presence of hops. A pretty nice barley wine, but since it is no longer produced, I dont plan on drinking much more of it. Which is fine, there are plenty better barley wines out there. Very nice, and interesting, but it wont hurt my feelings to know I will never have this one again.

Bottle. Dark amber body with no head, just a very small ring of bubbles. Nose-big fig, raisins, candy corn. Taste-very oxidized, flavors very close to the nose, sweet, dark fruit. Leaves a nasty oxidized taste.

2005: Dark amber with body with no head or lacing, almost like dishwater. Aroma is rum soaked raisins with notes of alcohol and caramel. Very sweet and syrupy to drink. Something felt limited about it though.

vintage 2002. Deep copper color small tan head, small lacing. Heavily malted carmels light alcohols and a touch of grass, very mellow. Nice well coated palate, lightly creamy. Sweet carmels and candied sugars w/ some light grass and alcohol in the swallow.. a very mellow barleywine that has started to show some age w/ a bit of oxidation.
