Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

Bottle vintage 2004. Thanks to Kramer17801 for the trade!
Big (overcarbonated) head. Red to orange colour. Hazy. Nice aroma of mature cheeze, dark fruit and caramel. Nice full bodied taste of raisins, dades, nuts, caramel. Warming and obvious alcohol content but not OTT. Sweet and salty aftertaste with plenty of licorice. I like.

Poured a dark brown with red highlights that leaves a cloudy eggplant body and an off-white head. The smell is terrific, rum soaked fruit, caramel malt, piney hop aroma with a buttery backdrop. The taste is prune juice, with a honey sweetness that stays spicy on the tongue and highly carbonated. The finish is sweet somewhat fruity to balance a minimal hop effort.

Mid-brown colour, almost no head, caramel, toffee and dates aroma. Very sweet taste, with alcohol, fruit and caramel aromas. Sweet finish with a touch of bittereness with nut, carmel and vanilla aromas. In my 2004 example, the hops had almost completely disappeared when drunk (7th May 2006), except for a strange numbing of the tonge. Not that complex for the strength. A reasonable beer, but no way is this an English-style Barley Wine. It has nothing in common with Bass No. 1 or Whitbread Gold Label. A little like an over-the-top, strong homebrew. I think this was one of Jamie’s (or another of the Burp gang) genrous gift.

2004. Mildly murky dark copper colored liquid. Minimal head, only a few bubbles surface to create a small isle and a ring on the glass. Pleasant, yet somewhat tame aroma. Light fig, caramel and touch of floral hops with a touch of spice. Moderate body with a slightly slick feel. Raspberry and plums start in the front. A baked fruit middle with some cherry and light port. A mild, yet quite noticeable hops flavor with a smoked herb quality. Nearly too dry in the finish. I long for a full malt linger. Just a bit too woody in the finish.
