Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

2005 bottle. A rich murky red brown with practically no head and a ton of fine sediment. The aroma is subtle, malt, yeast and redwine over a slight fruity hop. The mouth feel is syrupy and smooth with a healthy alcohol burn, very nice. The flavor is incredibly sweet and malty right up front, malt, maple, alcohol, sour, some roastiness, and a hoppy, roasty after taste. The alcohol and hops stay with you, but in a clean way. The alcohol being as dominant as it is cuts through what would otherwise be a cloying sweetness. Tastey March 28, 2007. Really matured in terms of the aroma. Big tasty malt, with some spice, cinnamon and hints of smoke were noticable, as well as some fruit, plus a point on aroma for that. The body was the same, but the flavor became a bit different as well. Big malt and leathery earthiness predominated. Far less off flavors, but I don’t see how I gave this an 8 given my last description, but that’s how I felt this time too, so it stays at 8. A really nice beer that has aged nicely, I wish I had more.

Bottled 2005. Red, cloudy. Alcohol is the major aroma, followed by fruit and malt. Flavour has grapes, caramel, alcohol, a subtle spiciness, and bitter (but well balanced). Smooth palate. The aroma/flavour are far from weak, theres a lot going on here and its very sweet. I enjoyed it!

2005 Bottle. Pours murky brown orange with some floaties. Fruity and malty aroma, but somewhat subdued for this style. Caramel and woody flavor. Finish is bitter and warming as it goes down the throat. A little too much rubbing alcohol flavor in the finish. Not bad overall. I’d drink this again.

Pours clear amber with a large white head. Aroma of sweet malts, fruit, citrus, and caramel. Flavor is sweet, alcohol moderately present (not over bearing), and fruity. Good body, good brew.

2005 bottle -- Pours a deep mahogony brown with a very small amount of carbonation leading to a small white head. Aroma is very subtle, carmel matls dominate, with some light cherry and maybe some butterscotch. Taste is amazingly smooth, malty and somewhat sweet. Light chocolate accents combine very well with a silky fruitness. Ending is very inoffensive, with light malts predominating.
2004 bottle -- Awesome color body, deep cherry. Barley, malts and dark fruits in the aroma, very complex. Great barley flavor, some fruits with hops. 8/4/9/4/14 = 3.9

Pours a clear amber with a thick white head. An aroma of toffee and rum is immediately noticeable. With warming notes of earthy hops and caramel malt really come to the forefront. The body is surprisingly light for the style but it just makes the beer more quaffable and it sets it apart quite a bit which I like. The flavors are bursting with brown sugar, rumy booze and earthy resinous hops. The finish is bitter but more balancing than really dominating. Very nice barleywine.
