Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

2004 bottle. Deep amber body with a dissipating, soapy beige head. Sweet and sour aroma with lactic and cherry notes plus some hot alcohol. Fairly sweet, maple syrup and fruit flavor with moderate sourness as if from a partially soured mash. The modest sourness enhances the fruit characters and brings out elements of cherry skins and red wine. Sticky mouthfeel. A distinct barley wine. I appreciate it for standing out.

2004 bottle, from trade with kramer17801. Dark ruby colored pour. Very foamy and effervesent, like Alka-Seltzer. But then there’s a good, sweet malt smell and flavor Ends up with impressions of hot alcohol and fruitiness.

2004 Bottle. Via trade with somebody but I forgot who; sorry. Before I even poured this beer it started to foam out of the top of the bottle like those little black ash snake fireworks, I’m a little worried as to the condition of this beer. Pours a nice dark garnet color with a huge, active tan head. It foams up so much that I can’t even pour the entire bottle into my glass at once. Aroma is a cross between cardboard, raisins, and overcooked vegetables. When the head finally settles down it’s almost three fingers thick. The flavor is sweet and very malty with a strong hop bitterness. Unfortunately, it’s also oxidized and beat up. I’ll try to re-rate if I can ever find it again.

2004 bottle. Poured a rather deep reddish-brown with an eventual 1.5 finger beige head. This just exploded out of the bottle... after a small pour that filled the glass with head, I let it sit for a while, and caught bubbles oozing out of the bottle. Heavy aroma of caramel, dark fruit, spicy malts, English hoppage, and dusty basement. Solid malty base right from the start with plums, caramel, and spices... Challenger hoppage gives plenty of bitter support around the edges, and alcohol makes the fruit pop on the roof of the mouth. Carbonation is way too high, though... and the flavors aren’t able to permeate all the proper taste buds. Bitter fruit and alcohol warmth at the finish. Tasty brew.

2004. Pours with a one-finger, light tan head that fades quickly and leaves no lace. Cloudy amber color. Good carbonation. Nose is sweet malt. Starts and finishes smooth and sweet, high ABV is in background. Medium bodied. Good alternative to DFH Olde School. $2.99 for a 12oz bottle from Julio’s Westborough, Ma.

2002! Rich hops, and malt aroma greet the nose. Hazy brown, hint of red at the edges, almost no trace of head. Flavour has a big malt start with some fine hops backing up the band, I don’t notice salt here, but the alcohol kick is still present. Medium bodied, dry and wonderfully bitter. Fantastic! Thanks Very Much to Warren Becker for gifting me with this treat.

Old Salty is not a misnomer as this beer is just that- salty. 2003 bottle pours amber brown and is a good example of an English Barley Wine with a salty finish.
