Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

’04 bottle. Hazy mahogany body, small white head. It might be my mind playing tricks on me but this beer smells like salted pecans coated with toffee. Cherry and raspberry syrup, tofee, caramel and coffee roast with an apple tartness sort of balancing it out. Finishes with light, tingly alcohol on the tongue, warms the belly too. Medium mouthfeel that leaves your lips sticky. I like the flavors in this guy but it’s all sweetness, and the mouthfeel is too sticky as well.

2000 Vintage. Brillantly clear, garnet tinged, dark brown color that produced a head of tan before disappearing below. Copious amounts of dark rum soaked fruits in the aroma. This goes over the tongue oh so smoothly. Very creamy and full and little alcohol until after the swallow. Warming and sweet but not quite syrupy. Very little carbonation. Complex and well done.

2004 vintage, bottled; Incredibly weird when poured, I was started to think that this might be a bad bottle, NO head at all. The carbonation level is very weird, some sip has full and some almost none. Malty and hoppy, well balanced. There is also a fairly amount of spice of some sort, bitter spicy finish. Some raisins and roasted malt. Maybe candysugar? Complex and good. Thanks ruffian for bringing this

12 oz. bottle, 2004 vintage. Mukry orange red with yellow tints. Large tan colored rocky head. Apple juice, caramel, and doughiness in the aroma. Caramel, raisin, biscuit, and sherry notes in the flavor. Raisin, alcohol, and some hop bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is chewy and hot.

Vinous with brown sugar, orange rind, nutty malt and a good amount of hops in the nose. Body is cloudy ruby brown, fluffy off white head. Flavor is vinous with sweet cherries, brown sugar, alcohol, rich malt and a nice orangey hop thing. Oddly carbonated - very high carbonation level but still smooth.

ruddy brown pour, cloudy with small if any head. Vineous barn yard aroma. Very malty to start, vineous. Hops arrive in the middle and roasty malt, chocomalt to finish sweet. Alcohol is non-evident. This is a nice barleywine.

12 oz bottle, 2004 vintage. Pours a murky brown with the largest head I’ve ever seen on a Barley Wine. I had to pour this in three legs to fit it into a Chimay chalice. Aroma is a mix of caramel maltiness, citric hops, toffee, yeast. Yikes, flavor on this one is very intense. Syrupy malt, huge bitter hops, and high alcohol. This is really "hot" with alcohol. Mouthfeel on this is the major drawback, very fizzy and carbonated, not what I expected. It seems to actually cover up some of the flavor. I prefer a subtle stillness of carbonation in mine personally. I have lots of this to age, so I will rerate when the character warrents.
