Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

(Bottle) Pours a murky brown body with a spare off-white head. Aroma of raisins, maple syrup, nutmeg, and malt. Nice balance of hoppy & malt flavors. The flavor reminds me of a vintage English Ale.

Light reddish brown with a thick head and quite bubbly for a barleywine. Malt, hops, and caramel on the nose with a little alcohol. Full and sticky mouthfeel. Flavour is brown sugar, caramel, hops, alcohol, and molasses on the tongue. Bitter end but a little too much alcohol at the end.

Out of the bottle this brew pours a darker amber with a small off-white fizzy head that falls quickly. Hint of caramel and a touch of fruit. This was a very nicely balanced barleywine and very flavorful. I didn’t note the vintage but I think it was fairly fresh, and very nice for not being aged for a long time.

120z bottle. Hazy, murky brown colored body with a dark tan bread crust colored head. Flavors reminds me of Bigfoot, only it’s more mellow... somewhere in between a sweet malty BW and a hop orgy Bigfoot. A light biting of the hops, a little sharp on the tongue. Leafy and barkdust like aromas, with a big flavor of brown sugar and cinnamon... some maple and pipe tobacco. Very good stuff, right where I want a barleywine to be.

(2002 BOTTLE BY WAY OF DOCLOCK)poured a super muddy dark brown with NO HEAD AT ALL.the aromas were red liquorice, grapefruit, cotton candy, ice tea,and caramel malts.the first sip gave me a nice smooth mouthfeel that coated my tounge and throat.this was not in your face like alot of barleywines can be.(im sure the age had something to do with it)the flavors i recieved were maple syrup, cotton candy, pine, caramel, hops, and some belgian characteristics sneaking through.this is truely a nice barley wine and im sure the age has alot to due with it.

2000-2003 Vertical Tasting. Many Thanks to Doclock For the Trade!! Dark Brown Coloring with White Head. Bread Dough and Rich Malt Aroma. Rasiny/Prune Notes....Almost Grapey Taste..with Good Sturdy Warming From the Alcohol. Agreeably 2002 Was My Favorite of the 4 Years. Years Varied Enough to Make Each One Its Own Brew. ’03 Was Nice, But Tasted a Bit Young Yet...’02 Seemed the Most Balanced and Enjoyable to the Palate. ’01 Indeed Had a Salty Tang to it and ’00 Definitly Had a Celery Tang to it.... Old Salty was a Very Enjoyable Barley Wine and Most Certainly Worth Aging in the Cellar for a Few Years.

bottle, thanks to the_beer_god. nice malty aroma, with some pineapple-like smells too. surprisingly hoppier than the aroma, perhaps that’s just how the challenger hops work. very drinkable, but there is a hint of high-octane alcohol that shows up when it’s a little warmer. definitely worth drinking.

A beer from New Joizie. Not bad. Poured a cloudy dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma was sweet, hops, fruit, toffee. Flavor was mild. A nice barley wine but there are so many better ones.
