Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

Bottle: Hazy amber with a small light brown head. Thick and sweet aromas that show just a bit of floral and citrus hops. Most of what comes through in the nose is a salty, bitter malt with some bread and dough. Taste is slick, with medium amounts of carbonation. There’s hints of citrus, orange, and pine hops, with a syrupy sweet malt & toasted grains background. Finishes somewhat dry with mild hops and light biscuit malts.

Pours a hazy rich amber hue with perhaps some orange highlights. The head is a frothy creamy, light amber brown color. The aroma is sticky with Lupulin laden hop aromatics. I get notes of bergamot, rum, chewy caramelized malt, rum, and even some bready, toast type notes as well. This beer is definitely sweet and also a bit fizzy as it hits my tongue. The palate is quite a bit thinner than I was expecting. In fact it is a bit too thin, which causes this beer to be a bit more harsh than I was hoping. The alcohol is also quite evident, and the finish is a bit hot. The hops are quite evident, with notes of citrus, tangerine, a hint of pine, and a bit of lacquer. As the beer warms up and oxidizes a bit in my glass it starts to pick up malty notes of salty biscuits, lightly tasted dark breads, and caramel.

This beer is a bit young, and I am a bit sad that I opened this beer at this date, I really should have held on to this for a couple of years before cracking this open, and I recommend that you do that.

2004, Clouded dark amber pour with thick and coating beige head. Aromas are thick, sweet, and bready with some underlying floral citrus; brandy-like. Flavors are bright up front, lively and grainy like biscuit with marmalade. Bitterness moves in mid-way and holds fast beyond the finish. A nice representation of an east coast style barleywine that’s not over the top with bitterness and focuses on balance. The beer ages well.

Pours a deep cloudy amber hue with a frothy frothy frothy slight off-white head with wonderful lacing. Aromas of pine, citrus, cereal, a little bittersweet chcoclate and a hint of ginger. Mouthfeel is full bodied an eyeopening finish. Flavors of tobbacco, scotch, oak, prunes a little salty. Very interesting. This is one aggressive beer and may be enjoyed sparingly, but needs to be tried at least once.

Bottled, nice brown color. Small fast diminishing head. Weird nose: Pine mixed with unbelieveable sweet cookie dough. Salty indeed with prunes. Bitter but a weird bitterness accomplished by an intense alcohol taste. This is just not what I like.

Smells like the ocean, kinda fruity too. Reddish amber color and a lathery head. Warm, round, and sweet malt. Salty finish. Daring mix, but just odd and not successful. A failed experiement, really. Bonus points for adventurousness, but not good.

Bottle. Rich, smooth, tasty brew kind of along the lines of a double bock: molasses, brown sugar, baked apples and a bit of cola. Alcohol is hidden, easy on the hops, a bit sweet

Nice dark red color and thick cream head with it. Aroma is sweet and a bit earthy. Flavor is hard to see past the carbonation’s strong bite. Once there it has a decent enough sweetness and mouthfeel to it. However its hard to get past the sharp bitterness at first.
