Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

[2004 vintage - cask conditioned - Sharp Edge Tavern - East Liberty, PA] Dark copper color with a bubbly and soapy looking white head. Very sweet and complex aroma of malt, honey, apples and caramel. Flavor was very sweet as well. Initial taste reminded me of very hard cider, but then the malt and honey and caramel rolled in and mixed well with the citrus and apple taste. Very smooth and sweet finish with a nice alcohol punch at the end.

Medium reddish copper, crazy big head. Not what is reported as typical for this brew (2004). Aroma is sweet malts, with a note of honey and alcohol. Very smooth body, caramel flavors abound, with a gentle bitterness as the flavors fade. Not at all what I was expecting. The head was Belgian, and huge for such a big beer. The flavors were subtle and balanced, reflective of a much older beer. But all in all, quite enjoyable. Can’t help but think I got an unusual bottle.

2003: Hazy red copper ale with no head. Grapes and cardboard in aroma. Nice sweet taste with lots of raisins, sweet caramel, oranges, and loads of hops. Very warm and complex body. With a nice old cheddar , excellent.

This beer pours a cloudy ambery color with a thin white head and no lacing to speak of. The aroma is sweet with maltiness, brown sugar and alcohol predominating. The flavor is also highly alcoholic but is very long-lasting and developing. A caramel malt base leads sweetly into a vanilla coated dry finish. I also got a hint or two of some orangey fruit esters up front and in mid sip. Sure the caramel and vanilla would hide every once in a while and this would get astringently fruity, but then they’d come back out and make their appearance. Fairly medium bodied, moderate dry finish, sweet and fruity. Pleasant barleywine but rather inconsistent.

Medium to dark brown color. Small to no head. Aroma is malty, brown sugar and alcohol. A mediu bodied barley wine. Malts are fruity and sweet, touch of caramel and vanilla that went away after a while. Gives way to a lots of malt fruitiness. Nice smooth taste. Lots of brown sugar and fruity flavors that mix with the alcohol. Finishes a little thin. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet with a BIG alcohol finish.

2004 Edition. Cloudy brown, no head. Red Plum jam on toast is the aroma, with maybe some brandy, too. Thick, rich mouthfeel. Sweet, malty flavors - prune, rasin notes - the a peppery hop bite, with maybe a hint of citrus flavors. Long, thick aftertaste. Cherry flavors emerge as it warms. Very Tasty. Thanks, Secret Santa!

Murky burnt caramel color with a fairly lasting tan head. Yeasty, banana, raisins, caramel and toffee aroma with a powerful alcohol splash. Flavor explosion. Sweet malty toffee, caramel, candied fruit, and molasses. A hint of bitterness but a great addition in the finish. Rich, creamy, and chewy. This has some flavors reminiscent of a double. Slow alcohol burn as it goes down. A great barley wine but just a shade shy of Victory Old Horizontal.

murky brown with small beige head. Toffee, raisins, caramel, yeast, malt..Good stuff...like this alot. 2000 bottled. Better as it ages. Didnt care for the newer bottles at all. A particular flavor in them disagreed with me.
