Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

2000 Bottle. Just a bit past it’s prime in my opinion. Very flat, no head, no carbonation. Aroma is of raisins and brown sugar. Medium bodied. Smooth. Hops are very subdued at this point in the game. Not bad if you ignore the complete lack of carbonation. Perhaps a vertical tasting would be appropriate.

Pours amurky reddish caramel brown witha deep layer of tan head. The nose off this is heavenly.Strong notes of Sweet caramel candy and fruit.Bitter and sweet the hopiness is evident as is the sweetness.Alcohol is present but I like a beer that shows the ABV.This is still a little raw but it has a nice balance. Thanks to Zathrus13 for this brew.

Cloudy brown/red body, short ring of head and slippery clear lacing. Sweet fruity aroma with hints of hops. Taste is not as thick as I thought it would be, but full of caramel and sweetness - apples? - this reminds me of fall. A nice amount of hops from the middle to the end; it cuts thru the sweetness nicely. A little thicker and this would be a real standout. (Rating 1800)

Let me be your Salty Dog. Anyway, a delicious Barleywine. Alcohol is evident, but not 11%. Very rich taste that only gets better as it warms. A great beer.

An amber beer with a disappearing white head. The aroma contains hops, malt, and some alcohol. The flavor contains a lot of alcohol, but also malt, fruit, and spices while the body is strong.

Appearance: a murky, ripe orange color, with minimal head. Aroma, powerfully sweet, rich, possessing an ancient feel, something musty, yet magical, fruit is abundant, peach, cherry, orange, with a burning taste of alcohol peeping out, as well. Taste: sticky-sweet on the palate, canyish, a little, but mostly fruity, malts are large, hops minor. Swampy feel, but still pleasant, tasty, with an increasing kick. Like spiced apple soup. Very juicy, with a nicely sweet slip on the tongue with every sip, and a late arrival of alcohol. An interesting take on the barleywine style, and an unexpected twist that I quite liked. Good Ol’ Salty, I’d like to get to know you better! (that was what I thought of the 2000 version sampled in early 2004...here’s my notes on the 2002, had in early 2005): Beatiful, opaque burgundy body, plummish, raisiny, resting nicely under a creamy, beigish foam. Aromatics speak up from first crack of the crown, wafting out dark fruits and the sting of alcohol...a close examination gives a ripe, pungent smell, all afire, glowing large with fruit and spice, akin to cognac, a powerful nose, one I enjoy keeping my nostril hairs atingle with... Grapes, berries, cherries, yeast, cinnamon, cloves, pepper, juicy, pithy, all blended with glorious booze...a rich deliciousness, full of character, puckering, a little sweet, a touch tangy, very flavorful, but mellow, as well. Full bodied, rounded moutfeel, long, fruity finish. This is damned good, held up fine in it’s two years, and rewards this drinker well, warming and comforting in this Janurary freeze. Belongs in every conversation about the best barleywines produced in the U.S.A.

2003: Very nice Barley Wine. Very complex and rich of flavour and aroma. Very powerful, but well balanced.

looks like I’m doing the first 2004 edition rating. A very nice baaahhhley-wine (as my roommate says). Gotta grab a couple more bottles of this to age, would definitely improve on the taste (not that it isnt excellent even this young)
