Commercial Description:
Inspired by and brewed with Bill Coleman, creator of the 'Salty Dog' strip which appears regularly in the 'Ale Street News'. Bill's homebrewed recipes were the focal point for 'Old Salty'. Made with wonderful Maris Otter pale malts and some Belgian specialties, this strong ale is really defined by the use of Challenger hops (and lots of them). Although it is brewed in the English-style, the high bitterness level (especially when drunk young) makes this beer more drinkable and reminds you where it was made. This beer is released in December and is vintage dated.

2005 12oz. bottle, with thanks to Dorwart. Pours a clear dark burgundy with a tan head that drifts to a spotty covering, only slight lacing. Aroma is malty sweet; candied dark fruits, brown sugar, and some molasses. Flavor brings the aromas along well, fairly sweet; smooth and not much there to temper the sweet malts. Kind of a middle of the road barleywine, but not bad.

2003 bottle -pumpkin pie colored with no head. aroma is rich with raisins, citrus, browned sugar, molasses and alcohol. flavor is packed with vanilla, molasses, alcohol and a sherry like grape character. definitely sweet but not sticky or as sweet as the ’05. medium bodied with little to no carbonation. tastes as if it’s missing something???7/3/7/3/16

2005 bottle -muddy version of pumpkin pie color with no head. possibly due to it having a screw cap? light raisin, citrus and metallic maltiness in the aroma. flavor is bordering way to sweet...brown sugar, molasses, green grapes, a little vanilla and some definite oxidation. finishes with a herby/hoppy bite. 7/3/6/3/15

12oz 2004 bottle. thanks to dickinsonbeer for this. pours muddy reddish-brown with biege head. nose oxidized, port-like notes, and bready. nice nose. flavor is pretty oxidized but still good, slight papery, port like flavors, caramel, brown sugar, plums, slight tobacco, and a touch of syrupy sweet finish. the mouth feel and carbonation is pretty fizzy and body is a bit thin. alcohol really well hidden, there’s just a small warmth in the back of throat. in the end, this thing is still going strong, oxidized for sure, but still really nice. i never tried this fresh but i’m glad i at least got a shot at this 3 years in. i think i liked it a bit more than the overall number.

Bottle at Sune’s.... Unclear red/brown - offwhite head. Raisins, dark dread, dried dark fruits, sparkling, sharp licorice finish. Portwine like. Not complex enough.

hazy dark amber, nearly headless, sweet fruity malt aroma and flavor, malt flavor stays rich and fruity through warming, just enough bitterness to keep it balanced, should age very well

2004 version. Pours a thick and syrupy golden copper with a head that struggles to form. A milky swirl of tan bubbles floats and a thin collar surrounds the liquid. Sheeting action on the insides of the glass. Aroams of alcohol-soaked spicecake and/or bread pudding. Get the butane ligjhter and light this puppy up! Boozy flavors with plenty of warmth, syrupy sticky sweetness, and still 3 years later a healthy dose of hoppiness. Toffee candies. Chewy caramel. Ample fruit notes with some what seems to be cantaloupe and strawberry. Minimal carbonation as to be expected. A slow sipper that coats the lips and makes for an enjoyable evening with baseball on the telly.
