Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

2005 vintage I believe. Pours a chocolate brown with a soapy tan head. Rich and sweet nose. Lots of toffee and bakers chocolate with dark fruits a bit of soy/oxidized notes that blend really well. Bakers chocolate and molasses are the first flavors with maple syrup burnt malts, cereal grains, and bitter roast in the finish. Some oxidized flavors but still at a really good point. Finish is long and bitter. Wow, this is much better than I remember. An excellent beer, that I need more of. 9/3/8/4/17 = 4.1

Thanks to trade from puzzl. Mini vertical with 2004 and 2005 vintages. Poured a chocolate black with almost no head. ’04 has a very soy sauce roasted chocolate aroma, not very appealing, the ’05 has a really nice chocolate roast and sweet aroma. The body is thin for both brews, and is definitely a knock against it, but maybe that’s a characteristic of baltic porters?? Despite the soy sauce aroma, the 04 has some complex nice flavors chocolate, roast, smoke, licorice, not too sweet and rather tasty. the ’05 is similar but i didn’t really get any smoke and the complexities didn’t seem quite as pronounced. Creamy chocolate in the finish. A tasty beer. 2004 was probably about 6 months past its prime. 7/3/8/3/16 =3.7

Roasted coffee and chocolate, dark, ripe grapes and currants, slightly smoky, sherry-like alcohol, an excellent Baltic porter, I am really sad that the brewery closed. First rate effort.

Slight chocolate aroma with a nice roasted coffee smell. Black in appearance with a tan head. The palate is full with decent carbonation. The flavor is similar to the aroma.

Wow, somehow manages to be extremely smooth yet very full flavored with a kick. You can definitly tell the alcohol is there, but the smooth texture and flavor make for a well rounded beer with a lot going on.

12 ounce bottle from my SS winter 06. Pours fudgey brown with next to know head. Lots of chocoate fudge brown character in the aroma. Very oxidized. Fudge, licorice, cardboard, rummy. Fuller bodied. Wish I would have gathered more Heacyweight brews when I had the chance.

Dark black pour. Tan bubbly head that fades fast. Bubblegummy licorice infused roasted wet bourbon barrels. Flavor has roasty bitter chocolate, sweet bourbon notes, slight sour edge that brings a nice turn in the flavor. Slightly oxidized brownies.

Extra thanks to Pineypower for the hook-up! Poured a deep, clear burgundy with a short initial cap of creamy beige head.. didn’t stick around for too long. I picked up a bunch of semi-sweet chocolate, darker fruits, black malt, coffee, and licorice in the seductive aroma. Flavor had roughly the same elements as the nose... with dark fruit and milk chocolate taking center stage... charred woody bitterness and licorice grow outward and are more prevalent toward room temperature. Creamy for the most part on the palate with intermittant periods of lighter body... sticky dark fruit and licorice converge at the finish with some woodsy bitterness. Thanks go to Dean for my shot at this excellent brew!
