Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

2003 bottle from Ryan (frumptydumpty) Thanks! Pours out a dark brown / black color without much of a head. Smell is sweet, hoppy, roasted, chocoalte, malty, nice! Taste is similar, no alcohol present, sweet and refreshing. A damn fine baltic porter, one which I wish was still brewed after tasting this very fine sample. Thanks!!!

My favorite Heavyweight beer of them all. Black in color with no head. Smells of chocolate, coffee, molasses, and roasted malts. The taste was a mixture of bananas, chocolate, molasses, coffee, and smoke. Rich and sweet. Believe me when I tell you I shead a tear as I finished the growler.

Pours a fairly thick and oily looking black color with some ruby red highlights along the perimeter. A decent dense tan head is noticed initially, but fades to a thin coating quickly. Some minimal spotty lacing. Sweet, sugary aromas of cocoa and vanilla cream noted on first sniff with some notes of roasted malt, dark rum soaked fruit cake, and French roasted coffee beans also making an appearance. Mouthfeel was moderately thick, full and creamy with a nice restrained carbonation. Full, upfront flavors of dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and vanilla bean, mocha and caramel candy are all balanced nicely. Finishes with a subtle appearance of hop/charred malt bitterness. Alcohol is quite subdued. An admirable rendition of a Baltic Porter.

Bottle. Powerful chocolate aroma, brown sugar, caramel, yeast, sweetness. Very dark red-brown with a rocky dark brown head. Taste of chocolate and roast malt, well-integrated alcohol. Big body, slight crispness, nuanced layers of flavor. Coffee and hops, and a nice little kick. Subtle candyish sweetness in the bg. Warming and delicious, but I’m a little sick of drinking this after just 12 oz.

Revisiting this in December of 07: Chocolate aroma still pretty massive, along with that house yeast I miss so much. On the whole, has held up really well to age. Tweaking notes: could use a bit less chocolate malt, a few more fruity notes, and a less-raw alcohol, when it can be found. Still warrants a high score (~3.8), and still one of the best American examples of the style.

12 fl oz bottle.Pitch black. Pours thick and with a creamy brown head that looks kind of green in the current light. Soft roasted metallic malt aroma. A little alcohol sweetness in the nose. Bold rich sweet malty roasted texture. Ethyl alcohols are quite prominent. Soft mouthfeel. Powdery dry finish.

Pours an oily black color with a tan head. Nice roasted coffee and chocolate aroma. Very nice chocolatey taste and a surprisingly well hidden ABV. Also, your boy Mel Gibson hates Jewish people and always has.
