Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

Poured a choco-brown color with a minimal tan head. Nose of light brown sugar and other sweet malts....light fruits and some chocolate. Flavor disappointed a bit...sorta musty, sour, but had some coffee notes squeeze through. Behind the sourness there’s some hoppiness hanging around....tastes strange. Mouthfeel is smooth, a bit less than full-bodied....overall a mild disappointment.

12 oz bottle-Pours a black as midnight with no moon black. Holding the pint glass up to the light I still can’t detect if it’s clear or cloudy, but, holding up to the bright daylight it appears to bea clear black. Nice head, reduces to a thin creamy head that works along the side of the glass. Aroma is anise, coffee. Good taste, although not my idea of a regular repeat for my taste. You can feel the alcohol tingle as it works through the mouth. Smooth with a bite.

Ultrablack, with a caramel colored head, this product smells sweet and bready. Porter isn’t my main squeeze by any means, but this is pretty good as they go. Slightly chicory chocolatey aftertaste.

Coffee and chocolate nose. The mouthfeel is very full, smooth, and powerful. Taste is quite good with malts coming through and alcohol well masked, but well felt. Small head.

So far this is my favorite of the Heavyweights. (I wasn’t in the beer world sufficiently when the legendary B.O.R.I.S. hit taps). I can’t find a downside here. My favorite regional beer writer Lew Bryson collaborated with Tom and Peggy on what turned out to be a beautiful beer that has a full aroma, swirly foam, a crunchy flavor as if the roasted malts are eating away on your taste buds and a dry roasted finish with some malts in there to liven up the taste party. My wife feels this is too string compared to most porters we sample but to me its just about right. I had this from a bottle fresh from the brewery.

Cake-like yeast and nutty malts in the appealingly simple, sweet aroma. Opaque brown with a thin but lasting cover of tan head. Sweet brown sugar, molasses, cake-like chocolate and vinous dark fruits with a lightly roasty finish and some sneaky hops just to mix it up a little. Creamy smooth texture to this medium-bodied beer that stands up nicely with a moderate carbonation. Bottle (Half Time - Mar. 2005) enjoyed with Lubiere, MartinT, muzzlehatch, Olivier_MTL, Rastacouere and Yowie.

Bottle. Thanks Brock Landers! This one pours a great looking dark cherry cola color with a thin tan head. Nose of coffee and tanned leather, cool smell! Body is medium with a slight carbonation and a bit viscous... nice. Very nice initial sweetness, fading now to a bitter cocoa / coffee bitterness at its finish. Very nice balance, best that I have had for quite a while. A nice brown sugar molasses quality shines through in the aftertaste. I think that I like Baltic Porters! Thank God that this was not a repeat of that Two Druids nonsense that Heavyweight brews. This one is high, high quality.
