Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

Tasted as part of a 7 beer imperial stout/porter tasting. 12 oz bottle. Black color, khaki head, coats glass. The nose is roasty, bittersweet chocolate, and hops. The inital roasted malts flavor transitioned quickly to hops-driven, but sweet flavors such as citrus peels and floral flavors. Dry finish. A really nice beer. Thanks Bert! 7/5/8/5/18 4.3 RERATE (Nov 19, 2006 ) I bought a couple 4/6? packs a couple years ago and they sat in my cellar, getting plucked out every now and then. I am nearly certain this is the last one in my cellar. Since this beer is no longer made, this might be my last one ever, which is a little sad since this was one of my favorite beers after I started my ratebeer journey. The beer is sampled in my NB snifter. The beer is black, really, really black with a thin to non-existant head and evident bottle conditioning. Even though the beer is right out of the beer fridge and is served too cold, the aroma is monsterish. Huge roast, huge caramel, spicy, earthy hops, citrus, and a touch of sourness. The taste is roasty, dark roasted coffee, light vanilla, spicy, 70% dark chocolate, citrus, some overripe plums, and alcohol at the end. The mouthfeel is very thick, but is not at all cloying due to the roastiness and the hops. Numerical rating is for this sample. ADDITIONAL NOTES I’m having another one that a friend got me. I read that some were on the decline or had quality issues, but that isn’t the case with this one. It smells great, like a roasty fruitcake with a touch of sourness. The taste is complex, as I remember, and the mouthfeel is amazing. Perhaps this will be my last?

Aroma of roast coffee and treacle, deep brown, garnet at the edges. Roasted coffee flavour, nice chocolate notes and cream too. Rich, full bodied, bitter, oily. A very good example! Thanks jercraigs.

black appearance with no head; vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and nuts dominate the wonderful aroma....nice palate; flavor is similar to aroma, with chocolate and coffee notes and a hint of sourness

My first Baltic Porter. Sorta weak awkward aroma. Coffee, rubber, some chocolate malts. Smooth roasted coffee flavor. Great malty aftertaste. Sweet, alcohol hints. Different from other porters. Gives off a bitter flavor. Good beer.

bottle. Poured a small white head with smells of smoky and chocolate malts. Very spicy to me with a quite a bitter taste and a smooth finish. full bodied. The chocolate taste was quite apparent as well to me . Very good all around beer but I think I will have to try this one again if I am to rate it properly.

Bottled, thanks Rastacouere! Very black, no head. Lovely aroma of chocolate and grapefruit. Reasonably dry, full bodied, some moilasses and chocolate punch. Some bitterness. Complex, but confusing. Baltic porters are usually very bold, simple beers, this one shoots for finer details and complexity, and gets a bit lost somewhere on the way. An interesting experimental beer though.

Tried from a variety 4-pack. This is by (very) far their best brew. Pours a dark brown color, with brown head dissipating quickly leaving tons of lacing. The aroma is very nutty (hazelnut and nutmeg essentially) and sweet: chocolate, molasses, licorice. Flavor starts sweet with chocolate and fruits and turns into a very pleasant, slightly bitter nutty coffee finish. It’s still a bit thin and watery but it’s got some potential.

Secret Santa beer #6, sent by Jason (Dorwart). Oily, inky body yielded notes of molasses, licorice, toast, and chocolate with perhaps a hint of smoke. Medium-bodied, slightly tart, and plenty complex. Little apparent alcohol. True, there don’t seem to be many Baltic Porters around, but they’re almost without exception excellent.
