Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

A powerful sour acid, evidently from romano beans that subtracted from stoutlike characteristics of roast, herbal hops, anise, some chocolate malt, molasses. With undated bottle, who knows?. Thanks for the sample, lubiere.

Pours black body with an absurdly large billowy beige head that actually manages to overstay it’s welcome. Makes pouring an adventure. Interesting rocky aroma with notes of chocolate and some mocha. Flavour starts with an interesting bite to it. Some vaguely coffee like roast with lots of milk chocolatey notes. Underlying wine like tart/sourness and dark fruit, combined with the big head gave me concerns of infection but it seems fine. Somewhat dry finish. Nice beer that wasn’t quite what I was looking for. Many thanks to Natalie and Rob for the NYC pickup.

bottle...nearly opaque with no head. a thin tan film covers the beer. Dark chocolate malt is evident on the nose, some coffee also, although faint. Nicely bitter to start, with dark chocolate dominating. The bitterness fades in the middle, lending to some barleywine like flavors. Definite vineous tones to finish. This is an interesting brew, I enjoy it a lot.

Deep black, no head. Looks like oil, but not as thick as I had anticipated. Bitter hints of chocolate malts in the nose, lots and lotsa of roasted, toasted, something-or-others. Taste is yummy...

Black color and a nice sized head on top. Aroma is incredibly malty, mostly roasted notes running amok. Flavor is just as wonderfully malty. This has gets close to having a vinegar feel that occurs with some porters, but instead it just fills you up with too much malt for one’s own good. But it’s oh so tastey. I look forward to having to cross state lines to buy more of good heavyweight brews.

Poured black with a big but quickly fading tan head...smelled strange...roasty, chocolate and what? new Band Aid?...there is just something bizarre about it...the taste is much the same...richly thick mouthfeel...maybe some nuts, a little chocolate, and some alcohol...bizarre mouthfeel toward the end...my tongue feels like there is something highly carbonated on it but when there is nothing in my mouth and never was anything this carbonated...a little alcohol in there as well...quite interesting...

Beer labels can give little information, false information, or everything you need to know. Through the label of this fine brew, I’ve learned of the origins of it’s creation, it’s lager/ale hybrid nature, and the identity of Perkuno, the Baltic mythological counterpart to Norway’s Thor, God of Thunder, and that he used his hammer to punish the unjust. Well, now that I’ve been whacked with his tool, what does that make me? Appearance: full, Stygian black, dark as the night, with an impressive, fluffy, fizzing cocoa-tan head. Aroma: spicy and peppery, notes of anise and dark rum, molasses, and a bit creamy. Taking the first gulp, it looms large on the mouth and tongue, with a bit of a hop blast, warm, sweet, strong. Long, long finish, it rests comfortably on the palate, never a thought of leaving. Full bodied. Rich, rewarding, delicious. More flavors unfurl as we go, including a bit of sweet fruitiness. Complex, beautifully textured, wonderfully flavored, tasty as hell. Swiftly sends one to the land of the comfortably numb. One bottle ain’t enough, I need to have a full case on hand at all times, an unfailing supply. Just one thing to add: Don’t Hurt Me, Hammer!

Pours an oily black with a chunky tan head. Almost a doppel-like sweetness in the aroma, caramely and doughy. This is my first Baltic, and it really is tough to categorize. The roasty porter character is almost equally balanced by a lagery breadiness. It’s like a doppelbock with with more hops. Anyway, it is really tasty!
