Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

12 oz. stubbie brown bottle. No freshness date seen on the label anywhere. Poured out a deep chocolate brown color, with a sticky mocha colored head. The head lasted until the bottom of the glass, and left a sticky lacing all the way down the sides. Aromas are of chocolate malts, aromatic alcohols, some bananas from the yeast, and espresso coffee. Strong espresso coffee notes in both the aromas and flavors. An impressive beer so far, let’s continue, shall we? Thick, chewy mouthfeel, like a thick chocolate malted. Think malted milk balls with a shot of whiskey. The alcohol is noticeable, but not overpowering. It’s more a sinus opener than a mouth burner. Hops are very subdued, but you catch a whiff of the earthiness from them once in a while. Finishes sweet, but not cloying. Malty and rich. Makes you want to be a Russian on a cold, snowy winter’s night. Good thing I have 3 more for the upcoming Winter. I can see the need for them once the snow has started falling.

Black liquid with a hint of brown on the edges when held to the light. Huge head of smaller tan bubbles. Dark brown sugar, molasses, sugar cookies, light fruit, milk chocolate and a mild wintergreen hop component all in the aroma. Lots of complexity with out a lot of substance. Rich and chewy feel with just enough carbonation to lift it off the palate. Fruity sweetness greets the palate which hangs on until some hops come along late in the quaff. Mild citric and pine hops character which quite literally cleanses the palate and leaves little to ponder except for a faint black malt linger late. Alcohol is well hidden. Thanks CecretBanta for some fine selections this Xmas in July!

Chocolate and brown sugar, raisins, and roasted malts in nose and flavor. Nice, dense head. Nice finishing bitterness.

Pours a pitch black color with a thin head. Nice fruity and slightly roasty aroma. Great flavor of roasted malt and fruits, maybe chocolate, bitter finish. Light to medium body. Very rich, very well done.

The color is black with big brown head that dissappates quickly. Aroma is of dark malts and raisins. Sweet dark malt taste with chocolate and bitterness to balance out. Very rich tasting beer. The alcohol is well concealed. I do sense the alcohol in the finish, along with sweetness and dark malt bitterness. I wish I could get this more often.

Black with a dark tan head that goes all the way to the top floor! Thick and creamy. Rich aroma of dark caramel, raisins and chocolate. The flavor is rich as well, slightly sweet, tempered by the dark malt bitterness. Rich chocolate does the finish along with a taste of coffee. This is real yummy, I like it better as it goes.

Pours thick and dark with a dnesetan head. Smells a lot like chocolate milk. The taste is very roasted, with hints of chocolate and nuts. The alcohol is present but only noticeable if you’re tasting for it. I haven’t had a porter in a while so maybe I’m rating this higher because I really like the style, but it’s damn good. Thanks wilblake.

Bitter roasted coffee and chocolate hints in the nose. I get some fruits-maybe some cherries in there. Opaque black color with a nice little yellow/tan head. Start is a little tangy and carbonated. Fruity cherries come through in the middle with a little booze. Nice balance of bitter/sweetness to finish. Mouthwatering. Nice!
