Nose of red wine vinegar and charcol. Flavors of coffee, roast grain, some plum fruitiness, vinegar and salt. Lots of prior reviews talk about the coffee, but mine is pretty subtle with the coffee. Thanks to willblake for the bottle, but now I want another one to compare. chriso (4852), London, Greater London, England

I really wanted one of the numerous, much vaunted US craft beers that we tried in this session to blow me away, but this one didn’t do it. Looks nice enough. After that , it’s coffee all the way. The aroma is slightly musty, coffee grounds. The flavours major on bitter espresso coffee, but then it comes over all sweet and alcoholic. Quite pleasant, but a bit one dimensional. Bottled.

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 30, 2004 On draught: poured with very little head. Incredible aroma of smoke and almost peat. Thick taste with a hint of chocolate. Wow. Strong too. Understand why it’s an imperial porter! What a fantastic idea. Marc (477), Yokosuka, Japan

Sustaining tan head with a little lacing on top of a deep brown body. Full mouthfeel that is full of coffee, roasted malt, soft sweet dark fruits, and bakers chocolate. Finishes with a lot of dry coco, roasted malt, and breadyness SilkTork (4192), Rochester, Kent, England

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jun 21, 2004 A pitch black porter with very little carbonation. Aromas were an interesting combination of black cherry and milk chocolate. Flavor reminded me very much of a black forest cake, along with notes of coffee and just the faintest notes of hops and alcohol. Great oily mouthfeel too. Thanks to Lubiere for passing this one along! legion242 (1588), Richardson, Texas, USA
