Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

THOUGHTS: Sort of like prune juice and coffee. I had this a long time ago and loved it. It was even better this time. TECHNICAL: On tap at the Drafting Room in Exton at the release party for Victory Baltic Thunder. Poured a Dark brown with orange highlights and a small, tan head that mostly diminished leaving fair to good lacing. The aroma was chocolate syrup, prunes and coffee mostly. The initial flavor was lightly sweet and sour; while the finish was sour and a little bitter and lightly sweet. The flavor was mostly prune, coffee and chocolate syrup. The medium body was syrupy with an astringent and lightly alcoholic finish.

Pours dark. Malty sweet nose. Flavor is thick, but there is way too much of a tang here. It’s nice, with that almost blue cheese funk going on. But the tart and tangy thing just isn’t doing it for me. Feel is decent. The problem is that I have had a lot of Baltic Porters in my time and there are so many others that are much more even than this. Nice to try, but I’m afraid this is one of those where the hype is too high.

2-18-08 bottle thanks to the awesome Kramer17801
Black with nice tan head that looks similar to chocolate milk. Good lacing. Sweet maple roasted chocolate aroma. Flavor is unique - it has this sweet nearly tart cherry flavor. Mouthfeel is interesting - higher carbonation but not watery thin. The more we had of this - the harder it was for me to get the flavor of bad tart cherries out of my mouth. Hard to tell if it was intentional or not, but the other ratings seem to imply that it wasn’t.

2006. Pours a still black with no head. Smells funky and sour, almost like a brett stout, with strong cherry and berry notes. The taste is strong on the funk, with loads of complexity everywhere. Surprisingly carbonated, with lots of dark fruit notes and a port/sherry feel. Super clean and slick, with a long, sour, bitter, roasty, hell.. perfect aftertaste.

Bottle shared by Crosling. Poured a deep brown color with a thin tan head that diminished to a ring. Aroma of light chocolate and caramel malts, with slight brown sugar. Sweet brown sugar and caramel malt, with tangy hints of fruit (pears) that finishes slightly tart and dry. Definitely different than the average porter, and it was nice to try. Thanks Nick.

Tasted back to back with Victory Baltic Thunder. Deep and very dark brown pour topped with a rich, firm espresso foam. Fruity lager yeast, caramel, cinnamon and sweet, sandy black beans in the aroma; hints of bitter wood, resins, pear skins, and spiced meats. Warm and malty. Age has lent a smooth polish to the sweet and savory thickness of malt, which has an extraordinary density. Flavors of dark chocolate, malbec, red apples, molasses, and burnt honey; some espresso and mild astringent bitterness, but the body is primarily very meaty and sweet and lightly tart. Palate is full and soft with gentle carbonation; lengthy finish is very sweet with dark fruits and toasted vanilla. Not a hint of oxidation or harshness of age. Altogether, vastly superior to and indescribably smoother than the remade version; velvety, robust, and still very alive. Thanks Jason!

Huge thanks to Kramer17801 for this generous bonus!!
Pours black into a snifter with a small tan head, smells of chocolate, dark fruit, soy sauce, and almost a nutty peanut butter like character. Taste is roasty, very tart, and perhaps is oxidized, as I think this is what sherry is like... Thin body for the style and gets more tart tasting as it goes down. Most likely past it’s prime, but a pleasure to have had the opportunity to try nonetheless. Thanks again!

Thanks to Himerman for this one! Pours Dark brown with thin tan head. Roasty espresso type aroma. Similar flavor with hint of toast, caramel and diacetyl. Overall this was a very nice treat!
