It was basically black with a creamy tan head, had lots of roasty and malty aromas and coffee and chocolate flavours. I though I also got a bit of licorice in there somewhere and it was very smokey. Slightly puckering finish and a thinner mouthfeel than a stout, but still nice and smooth. rajendra82 (704), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Mar 19, 2004 Very dark brown to black thick opaque brew that had a real hard time forming a head. I had to pour it quite hard to coax one to rise up. Once formed the head looked forbidding with its large round bubbles and brownish tan appearance. It quickly disappeared into the blackness below and left me with a glass of black ink. Little to no Belgian lace and almost no latent carbonation. Very potent alcohol smell supplemented with hints of roasted pepper, currant, dates, and bitter dark chocolate. Little attempt is made to hide the exceptionally warming alcohol content. A very respectable sipping beer that is perfect to end a long tiring day or to keep company on a stormy night. I don’t see anyone downing this very quickly. npdempse (931), St. Petersburg, Florida, USA

All I can say is wow, this is one amazing porter. Tons of flavor and roast as well more full bodied that your average porter. A must beer if you can get it. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 16, 2004 Updated: Dec 29, 20052003 bottle sampled 03/16/04. Dark blackish-brown with some dark burnt tans and a hint of ruby peeking through. Not heavily filtered, but not bottle conditioned either. Large roasted-mocha head that perches atop the beer and dosent move. Aroma is strong, salty, dry barley, bitter baker’s chocolate, dark licorice and almost a wiff of rich buttermilk. Flavor is immensely dry, to start, bitter, burnt and salty, with plenty of hops and roast. Late in the beer, after it had plenty of time to warm, the chocolate malt really came out and sweetened the beer nicely. Up until this point, I thought it was too dry and bitter. But now it has a nice cocoa powder flavor with milk and sugar. Good body that does not thin out; medium to medium full with a slightly gritty texture. I’m glad I have another bottle aging. Alcohol is not apparent at all. Many thanks to Jeff for these bottles (Jeffin7).
2005 draught pint at Sunset Grille on 12/20/05. Haven’t had this one in a long time and figured it was about time. Pours well enough, opaque/transluscent deep burgundy tinged brown, with a smattering of moderately retained off-white to dark beige head, no lacing. Aroma is lightly salty, somewhat sourish, perhaps just heavy munich malt breadiness, it seems. Dark, bitter black chocolate and tangily drying (mix of salty and bitter) yeastiness. The flavor shows, probably, a strong lactic drying note that is prominent on the finish at first, and then steadily grows to consume the beer. The bitter, roasted, dark chocolate notes and tanginess on the end only add to the intensely dry flavor. Dry soy and ashy, yet aggressive graininess from the malts. Needs some creaminess and good god, a reprieve from this lacto/roasty dryness. 6/3/6/2/10 SDbruboy (1832), San Diego, California, USA

Pours thick and black with faint garnet highlights when held to light - also gives rise to a nice tan head. Aroma is dark roasted malts, coffee, molasses and bitter chocolate. Flavor is rich charcoaled malts, dark coffee, and burnt chocolate with a wonderful toasty finish. Thick, full body and creamy carbonation. Mmmmmmm....
