Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

Bottle courtesy of Himerman, thanks! Pours a dark brown with a small khaki head that turns to a ring of foam in no time. Aroma is pretty interesting. At first I thought it was subtle, but there’s coffee, buttered toast, caramel, toffee, a slight bit of dark chocolate, and something that reminds me of Oktoberfest beers (perhaps that’s the buttered toast?). Sweet chocolatey taste at first, some toffee, butterscotch, and caramel become known, dates, and buttered toast. Downplayed bitterness and astringency, bigger sweetness. Finishes with coffee, nuts, dark rye bread, and a sort of cloying buttery aftertaste. The aftertaste also reminds me of German lagers, and that makes sense considering the yeast used. The texture is in a funny state where there’s plenty of prickly carbonation, but the beer has lost its creaminess. Still, it feels slightly viscous on the tongue, but very drinkable. I hope to soon find out how the Victory reincarnation of this beer compares.

Sept. 2006 - Mmm mmm. Poured dark brown color with really dark brown head. Aroma was outstanding, rich malt and chocolate. The flavor was rich chocolate, some smokiness, roasted malt...sweet, but not overly so. Wonderful complexity! Mouthfeel was smooth, but maybe a little flat, but definitely not thin. Really nice.

Ahh, Perkunos Hammer. Just the way I remember but even better. Super dark brew with a very big aroma. Tons of fresh roasted coffee and rich dark bittersweet chocolate. The taste has just as much coffee with some nice creamer added. Very deliciously sweet praline sugar candy with a hint of hops to give it the balance it needed. Thanks beastiefan2k.

Form a bottle. Pours a dark murky brown. Aroma is a mix of roasted malts, some caramel, and dark fruits. Flavor is of roasty chocolate, caramel and dark fruits. Seems the age is starting to get to this brew. But still a good brew. Wish I could get a fresh batch to compare it to.

12 oz. bottle. This pours very dark brown with a small, fizzy, disappearing tan head. The aroma is an enticing mix of dark fruits, sweet roasted malt, and a touch of chocolate. The flavor is not as sweet as the aroma would lead you to believe. Other flavors present are dark fruits and a little chocolate. Some alcohol is present, as is some definite oxidation. Medium to full mouthfeel. I wish that I could have tasted this when it was a touch fresher. I am looking forward to the Victory version.

The aroma was roasty and a good amount of dark fruit. I also noted some mocha and coffee on the nose. The beer poured a very dark brown to merky black color with a thin amount of beige head and no lace. The flavor was chocolate, roast, coffee, dark fruit, and bourbony. The mouthfeel was full bodied and creamy. I enjoyed it.

Thanks to SS. Pours a dark black with no head. Has amazing flavor of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, tarty fruit, and earth. Finished very silky and boozy. Carbonation was not present. Overall pretty good.

Thanks to both beerbill and Dickinsonbeer i recieved 2 of these thanks paul and bill. This pours a dark brown with no head it fades just as quick as i poured it. The aroma is a nice sweet chocolate and coffee with some trace hints of wood. As the beer warms up and you take your first sip it is very robust and full of chocolate with a nice bitterness on the tounge. It is a nice and malty with some mild hops and tons of chocolate. The booze is not that hidden but you do know it is there. There is not much on the palate just chocolate and roasted malt but the duration is not that long. Im really dissapointed that these guys went out of business since this is a great beer to have in the fridge.
