Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

My buddy emerica56 got this in a trade and let me have it to myself. WOOHOO! Pours a near-black colour with orange edges and a creamy, three-finger orange-hued tan head. The pale malts really shine through in the aroma, along with notes of fig, licorice, nougat, caramel and orange zest (like in an ornage wheat beer). The flavour is roasty with coffee, milky chocolate, honey, nuts and dark pitted fruit all meshed together nicely. The booze definitely comes out more in the taste and finish. Gentle carbonation and a creamy, milky texture make the palate perfect for the brewski. I’m glad I got to rate this and it’s a shame these guys went out of business.

Aroma tends a bit towards the sweeter side, chocolate and dark fruits, with some sourness lurking behind it. The pour is a thick black, with just the smallest ring of tan foam clinging to the edges of the glass. A bit of tartness in the flavor, very full and thick mouthfeel. Not bad, but I am looking forward to trying the Victory version of this.

Poured black with a good size brown head. Aroma of sweet malt with some alcohol. Nice roasted malt flavor with some chocolate. Finished with some alcohol but not bad. Thanks Cornboy for hooking me up!

Thanks Drewbeerme for this sample. Dark brown with medium burnt brown head. Slightly roasty, sour, cherry sweet age aroma. Sour fruit flavor with dark malt, creamy milkieness, slightly sory, slight alc, big age. Medium to full body with slight carb. Interesting aged notes, very enjoyable.

Clear deep very dark brown body with a red shine, big lasting orange brown head; Beautiful deep a little thin salmiak (?) salty licorice blakberry fruity nose; A little thin body with a huge amount of carbonation, slightly fruity acidy otherwise balanced with a nice slaty touch; Medium long fruity blackberry, chocolate caramel, fruity coffee bean aroma, a little to much fruity acidity in body. Nice beer ack a little depth and fill. I am not really sure ifthe sour part is because the beer is broken or if it is a good thing.

12 oz bottle from JB175. Pours an awesome, pitch black color. Smell is roasted malts and some coffee. Flavor is nice, but there is a slight sourness that kind of throws me off. This has improved a bit as it has warmed. This manages to walk the fine line between an imperial stout and a porter, but regardless, it’s good.

appearance: dark coffee brown (i like that so i’ll use it) with a very thin off-white head....aroma: lots of chocolate and burnt roast with a little smokiness to boot....taste: coffee-like character supplemented by a general chocolate malt sweetness. roasty finish. thinnish mouthfeel that could have used a little more body. moderately carbonated. somewhat oxidized overall but still tasted rather tasty.

(Bottle via trade with <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=3 target=blank>EithCubes, thanks Mike!) Pretty nice except texture and flavor fell a bit short...Pours dark coffee brown with a thin tan head that recedes to a thinner covering. Great, rich aroma has all kinds of stuff - brown sugar, raisins, prunes, sherry, port, rum, molasses, roast, plum - very promising. Mouthfeel is rather loose and fizzy - surprising. Thin weepy rings of lacing. Flavor is much less complex and interesting than I would have thought from aroma - pretty much just dark chocolatey with very minor presence of notes in aroma. Some hints of alcohol and perhaps light port. Still pretty nice.
