Commercial Description:
A Baltic porter brewed in collaboration with Lew Bryson. This style is difficult to find outside of the Baltics. What a shame! The grist consists of lots of Munich malt and some chocolate and other specialty malts. A Bavarian lager yeast is used to create this. Dark and mysterious, subtle and well, it is called the Hammer. For those who care, Perkuno was the Baltic thunder god.

Served from a 12oz bottle via trade with BitterBrian on BA. Appearance is a deep brown/black with loads of bubbles along the sides and a thin light brown head. The aromas are full, semi-sweet chocolate, roasted malts, lactose, powdered sugar, smoke. The flavors are on their way down but still has some nice full of roasted malts, raisins, burnt wood, chocolate. A solid beer but past its prime.

12oz bottle courtesy of riversideAK – thanks Alex! Pours deep dark brown with almost no head. The nose is dark fruit, cocoa, roasted malt and booze. The taste is sour milk up front, but that fades to ashy cocoa, toasted malt and light coffee. Lighter mouthfeel than expected. This one may have a bug or two in it. Still tasty.

Pours a rich brown color with a brown head. Aroma is caramel, toast, chocolate, cherries, some plum, toffee, raisins, some vanilla, and alcohol. Flavor is plum, caramel, chocolate, strawberry, toffee, and a thin toasty finish.

12 oz. bottle - thanks to eclectic for the trade; clear, dark brown with thin off white head; aromas of very sweet candy sugar, touch of butter, nuts and rich malts; flavors well faded with age and nothing interesting going on; sweet toffee baltic flavors with thin texture and some sweetness and dark fruit; was expecting more, but this is plenty old at this point

Majestic thanks goes out to FROTHINGSLOSH for this special brew! Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 7/9/2009 Pittsburgh RB tasting extravaganza (PGHRBEXT) at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever I see a spread of bottles like I did there. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we served! For example, how about this beer; heavyweight hammer 2006! Barely any aroma, but what I do smell is a little off. Starts off really strong on the palate then goes somewhat astray. Weird! Some smooth carbonation, but just barely. I think I can’t really describe this experience, very unique. I don’t know what to really say about this brew. Rude finish. On style, even this old.

This one was sampled a bit old, mind you, slightly oxidized it seemed, but not quite sure. Poured a dark dark brown color with a lgiht tan head. Aroma was sweet roasted malts, but not burned, and some dark chocolate as well. Flavor was somewhat sweet chocolate, slightly roasted but thinned and a bit ruined by the oxidation.

This one has seen better days. Had this one at the RB Pittsburgh tasting. That said, there is a good beer under the oxidation.

Bitter chocolate, tar, tobacco, roasted malts. Pours very dark brown, black at center. Very rich dark chocolate, dark fruits, sherry-like, wine-like flavors, very smooth chocolate. It has a silky mouthfeel, very smooth. So so good!!!!
