Near-black and surprisingly thick with lasting touches of foam and lacing...interesting combination of roasty chocolate, light fruits and farmy weirdness in the nose...luscious mouthfeel contains breathtaking dollops of sweet orange, tart berries, fresh and dried herbs and lots of acidity...hugely drinkable and smooth, a quaffable saison if there ever was one, perhaps a bit too "clean" if you know what I mean, but there’s just enough funkiness for me to make it a winner. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 11, 2005 Cloudy brown with a small beige head. Aroma of lactic sourness and roasted malt. Flavor has notes of fruity tartness, chocolate, roasted malt, a hint of funk and yeast. Very interesting overall flavor that works out quite well in this brew. Medium body with very lively carbonation. TheBeerGod (3171), Newport News, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 11, 2005 Bottle, courtesy of jeffin7. Dark brown body. Nose is roasty malts, tart fruits, light spice, ight nuttiness, and some lactic notes. Taste is sour fruits, light roasty flavors, more lactic notes, light earthiness and spices. Someone mentioned a Belgian stout while we were drinking this. That’s close to what I thought and I see jeffc666 has Belgian porter. Both are almost spot on. Body is light-medium with a moderate carbonation feel. Finsihes with taosty notes, sour fruits, light earthiness and yeast. Nice beer and definitely reminescent of a Fantome. jeffc666 (1895), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 11, 2005 I can certainly see the Black Ghost linneage in this one. Dark caramel brown with a small light tan head. The aroma is Roasted maly, nutty, chcoclate with some funky herbal spicy yeast. Sour then sweet, totally a Belgian porter. An interesting range of flavors but IMO too much roasted malt that is detracting from the other more subtle flavors and aromas. Medium soft chocolately finish.
