| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Aug 26, 2005 (750ml bottle) Given to me by MaiBockAddict; opened at DumDum’s Belgian Sendoff on August 25, 2005. Pours a frothy, white head with a hazy golden body. Nose is wildly Fantome: sour, spiced and yeasty. Unfortunately this recipe falls short - the flavour is very tart, lemony and somewhat sea salt. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 8, 2005 Thanks to Secret Santa for this one. Pours turbid dark straw colored, with a huge, fluffy, white head. Aromas are floral esters, yeast, hops, citrus, and heavy malt. Tastes floral, spicy, with some fruity esters, Brett, and finishing coriander. Smooth, firm palate, with stationary floaties throughout. Dorwart (1825), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 7, 2005 Decent head in my chalice. Rather soapy looking head reduces down to a nice dense creamy foam. Awesome carbonation keeps a nice this sheen on the surface. Spicey, yeasty, grassy, citrusy, lots of things ending in y in the aroma. Color is a slight turbid golden orange. Kind of glows when held up to a light. Fizzy in the mouth. Light and citrusy with plenty of spices (pepper and ginger) lemon and is a little sour. The sourness actually accentuates the flavor and makes the mouth salivate. Finish is clean and a little tart. A pretty good saison and one that I had a hard time tracking down. Oh and just for everybody with bottle 1631 (that I have also) that is actually not the bottle number but the price code from Sommerville Supersaver in New Jersey. He hand numbers all of the stuff he gets in for vintage dating and pricing and such. Styles (1653), Lincoln Park, Michigan, USA

Very sour lemon aroma and taste. Household cleaner-like in a way, but I like it. Not much else going on but lip-puckering sourness, which is fine by me. One of the few brews that can get away with it. Kevin (1918), Colorado, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 22, 2005 Many thanks to jimmack04 for this bottle. Saison is a style that is definitely becoming vogue these days. More and more American brewers are attempting it and sometimes with great success. Put me squarely in the camp that thinks that this is a very good thing and hopes for many more American saisons. Cloudy golden-orange body topped by a lovely white head that leaves big thick sheets of lace in its wake. The aroma is strong and noticeable as soon as the crown is cracked. Very yeasty: white pepper, marmite, some floral and lemon-citrus all topped off by a bit of grape/apple. The flavor is quite lemony almost tart like lemonade. Nutty toasted grains come forward that were missed in the aroma. A bit of a hoppy bitter bite greets the tongue late and fairly assertive throughout. It is maybe a tad rough around the edges. The palate is lively, lightly acidic, and medium textured. There are definitely some good components here but it stays chaotic and disjoint. This is not a totally bad thing but compared to the subtleties and complexities of a beer like Fantome La Gourmande this is just average, but still leagues ahead of most other beer.
