Tons of molasses and brown-sugar laced cookie dough scent. Quite rich and sweet (almost cloying)at first, quickly mellows with a touch of bitterness. Alot of almond nougat a la a British candy bar I had recently. Got the most raisin flavor in the finish, along with a lot of almost-burned brown sugar. "Dark fruit" flavor is not assertive but present. Alcohol never makes its presence known.
Amazingly rich and full. Makes me excited about Scotch ales and rating again.

Maple and brown sugar aroma with just a faint hint of smoky malt. Sweet chocolaty malts, dark fruits and toffee. Very rich with just the smallest hints of smoke. This has held up very well over the past few years. swoopjones (1920), Buffalo, New York, USA

Ligt malt character in the aroma. Notes of licorice, rasiny dried fruitiness, little scotch ale characteristics like smoke or peat. Still pretty tasty Cletus (5058), Connecticut, USA

Smells spicy and sweet with some smokiness and some oxidation creeping in. Tastes of cardboard, cobwebs, spicy and sweet. Drink up if you have any left. yobdoog (1502), Woodridge NY, New York, USA

Pours a viscous syrupy dark malty goodness. Aroma is sweet with some cardboard and mellow spices and fruit. Taste is smooth and sweet, fruit and caramel. I would have loved to try this fresh. durhambeer (1224), Durham, USA

Deep brown, red-tinted pour with a tan head that quickly disappeared. Caramel, slight peat notes, malt, sugar, slightly like a barley wine but I think it was just the oxidation. I’m sure this beer was good in its day. SuzyGreenberg (1410), Seattle, Washington, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 6, 2009 Thanks JCB for sharing. Pours a dark toffee brown with a two finger tan head. The nose is sweet, earthy, peaty, oxidation comes through for sure, definitely showing signs of age (too much of it). Flavor is similar, sweet malts, caramel, leafy hops, peaty, oxidized. Definitely past its prime. Would have love to have tried fresh.
