| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Feb 12, 2009 In short: A highly roasted and slightly fruity strong dark ale that could pass as an fruity Imperial Stout/Porter.
How: Bottle 22oz, consumed when about 1 year of age. Bottle sent to me by Hopscotch, many thanks my friend.
The look: Dark brown-ruby body toped by a small beige head
In long: Nose of hard candies, roastiness and alcohol fumes. Taste has an interesting blend of dried dark fruits, burnt malts, fudge, almonds and caramel. The beer is so roasted that is really feels like a fruity imperial stout. Alcohol is rather well hidden considering the alcohol fumes on the nose. The highly roasted malts bring some kind of dusty character to the beer that helps drying it out. A short but sharp bitterness that resembles chewing on raw/green hops. I thought this would just be another brutal extreme beer but it turned out better than expected and I easily went through the 22oz. A good sipper. I would gladly have this HeBrew Fiftypercentoffeverything Eleven again. BrotherGrendel (611), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 9, 2009 A- Pours a deep dark brown hue, head is two finger’s of tan sparkling and frothy head that is mostly sustaining, good lacing throughout
S- A wall of stiff alcohol hits you on the initial sniff and drowns out much of the aroma, followed by big roasted malts (chocolate mostly) and more subtler pine hops, tones of licorice, dark fruits, and cherries
T- Initial taste is chocolate and toffee malts with bitter dark chocolate, opens up to some creamy and roasty qualities, and then the cherries, molasses, and dark fruit, finishes with slight bitter hops
M- Medium-bodied ale, watery texture, good carbonation
D- Wow, this is one heavy-hitting "brown" ale (although its more of a hybrid style) at 11%, it is reminiscent of a barleywine imho but not as balanced, the alcohol is overwhelming and the malts are a bit heavy-handed, i think this is a fun style but it definitely feels experimental in nature Acknud (794), Morganfield, Kentucky, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jan 25, 2009 Heavier than I expected but this just served to make it great. Near black pour that is very thick. Small head. Roasted malt aroma with some coffee. Taste is sweet roasted malt, coffee and dark fruits. Very thick mouthfeel. BBB63 (4283), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 24, 2009 Bottle and served in Stone IRS snifter: Pours a deep brown with hints of a bronze highlight topped by a small but lasting frothy tan head which left very nice lacework upon the glassware. The aroma has a big vapour of toasty sweet malts, fig, molasses and plum, earthy mineral and even a hint of peat smoked oak. The taste is a rich heavyweight knock out of malt and dark fruit, not a hop bitter to be found. Basically this has become barleywine crossed with stout in nature. Some oxidation actually adds to the palate as does the moderate levels of alcohol. The mouth feel is sticky and oily, lush and luxurious, very nice and matches the flavor profile very well. Color me impressed, this has aged into a sweeping Tour De Force that I really enjoy. Seems to be at prime, drink some right now for a classic winter warmer. Ughsmash (4099), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 24, 2009 Bomber. Poured a rich shade of coppery-brown with a fine shimmer to it.. just wish the head stuck around for a bit longer. The aroma was quite strong with rye alcohol-fueled molasses, caramel, and butterscotch accented by floral notes and candied fruits.. interesting array of stuff that transcended the initial hit of booze. The flavor had molasses and caramel again at the core with a grainy, alcohol-accented bitterness around it.. hard to break the bitterness into meaningful character descriptors.. thick, sweet, warm finish with molasses rolling into soy and a hint of tar. Thicker-bodied and a tad spicy on the palate from the booze factor.. carbonation was low.. OK flow across the palate. There were some good things in here, but it was rather hot and muddled overall. mspindler (352), Alta Loma, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | Jan 6, 2009 22 oz. bottle. Opaque dark brown with a mocha colored head. Mellow aroma of brown sugar, hints of chocolate. Tons of caramel malt in the flavor and some molasses, some alcohol and hop bitterness. Heavy on the palate and a bit creamy from a nice amount of carbonation. Hank1980 (776), Athens, Georgia, USA
