dekeq (35), New Jersey, USA Nov 2, 2009 Poured out pretty black - might as well have been called an imperial stout. It had a nice, dark, yellowish head that was very full and lasted quite a while. The edges of the brew had a caramel tint when you held it up to a light but it was still very opaque. It had a very interesting scent that started hoppy and went sweet. The flow of smells was very interesting and there were quite a few to pick out. At the first taste, it seemed a little bitter and then a bit of sweetness came in. It was also very frothy and it ended with a nice alcoholic taste - very subtle considering it’s 12%. This brew had quite a bit of body. It was very smooth and I really enjoyed the flow of flavors and textures. SHIG (2012), Aviano, Italy Nov 1, 2009 Bottle: Poured a deep dark chocolate brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma was toasted malts and hints of dark fruit along with bakers chocolate. Taste is steep roasted malt with a hint of chocolate. Just enough alcohol in the finish to make this stand up to the tongue. Cletus (5001), Connecticut, USA Oct 24, 2009 Pours dark brown with a tan head. Smells of roasted malt and resiny. Tastes bitter and boozy with some sweet malt on the finish. djd07 (724), Houston, Texas, USA Oct 22, 2009 Bottle as shown. Pours a very dark brown with a small creamy tan head that diminishes quickly leaving decent spotty lacing. The aroma is a strong alcohol and roasted malt and chocolate. Thin mouthfeel with a burnt caramel with chocolate and alcohol very present but not too overpowering. A very good American strong ale. beernovice39 (241), South Carolina, USA Oct 14, 2009 Whew the smell of booze! The flavor tries to come through but all i can taste is the alcohol....not my thing. McGarnigle (303), Rochester, New York, USA Oct 3, 2009 Bomber cellared for a year. Very dark, none more black. Minimal head when poured in a goblet. Licorice and dark fruits in the aroma. This is a kitchen sinker: rye, oatmeal, munich among the malts. Is there a logic to it, or is the 12 malts/hops theme is a gimmick? It has a rich malt flavor, some star anise, some roast, and even some citrusy hops. Some booze comes through. If you like them big, this does bring lots of flavor, and is good value. planky84 (99), , Greater London, England Sep 24, 2009 Bottle from Utobeer market stall. Pours a deep, dark brown. Beige head which disappears quickly. Very nice aromas of toffee, caramel, roasted malts, brown sugar, candy sugars...interesting. Flavours of toffee, bitter chocolate, black cherries, plums. Sweet, bitter finish. Quite nice. Dorwart (1807), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Sep 23, 2009 Thin head of brown bubbles. Quite dense. Wow, the aroma is wafting across the table to me. Smells awesome! Rich malty aroma with lots of dark roasted malts, black cherry, sweet caramel and some cocoa. Color is a very dark brown. Rich and roasty. Loaded with malts, more black cherry, raisins, prunes, toffee and some burnt candy sugar. Very complex flavor. Oily palate and smooth as butter. Noticable alcohol but is hidden VERY well for a 12’er. Finishes strong roasty and malty. Light bitterness but is really overshadowed by the thick syrupy malts. A pretty damn good brew.
