Aroma starts sweet with some chocolate notes as well as some anise and vanilla. There is ethanol presence retronasally, which is pretty strong. Mildly transparent dark dark brown body with a disappointing small tan head and no lacing. I dont know what the fuck this is or what it is supposed to be, but it is chalky, roasty, burnt, sweet, with some anise and herbs. It’s just really really weird. Has a strange herbal flavor that lingers. Floral? Heather? Luckily, this improves as it continues to warm. The chalkiness is still there and is a huge turn-off. topherh (943), Kearney, Missouri, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 8, 2009 Pours just this side of black. Medium biege head. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, vanilla and a hint of licorice. Flavor is lots of malt. Brown sugar, molasses, chocolate, and toffee. Decent now might be better with a little age on it. kopher (309), New York, USA

nice caramelly aroma, some brown sugar, prunes, vanilla, maybe some oak
first sip is a bit offensive on the sweet side, but after that it was more mellow
very smooth, some warming alcohol but no bite.
not sure about the 12 hops, they seem to have to work pretty hard just to subdue the malty sweetness
its pretty thick also, and the opposite of refreshing, but its good Beardface (1036), Eugene, Oregon, USA

Aroma of brown sugar, molasses and some caramel and a very sweet and smooth taste with a near perfect balance between the hops and malts, though it could be slightly hoppier. hombrepalo (780), Chicago, Illinois, USA

I love the thick malty taste in this one, although it was not as good as aged 11. Had an odd sourness by comparison. zach8270 (2138), Henrietta, New York, USA

Aroma is dark and fruity with lots of malt and some hints of vanilla, sugar, chocolate, and licorice. Flavor is a blast of malts right in your face mixed with some dark and roasty notes of chocolate, plums, tobacco, hops, and candy sugar. Very thick and chewy and really tasty.
