Almost black in color with a quickly diminishing brown cream head. The beer seemed very thick when I poured it. It smelled similar to Amber Bock. It had a roasty taste with a slight coffee aftertaste. I was impressed with this brew. I wish we could get good beers like this here in South Dakota but that will never happen. obisbeer (558), Barcelona, Spain
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 15, 2005 Very dark brown with small head. Nice hop malt blance on the nose with slight sour note. Med-heavey weight with a early sweetness and lightly drying finish. Chocolate, toffee, carmel, and rich with a dried fruit undertone that comes out on the finish. The hops are noticeable though mainly show up as a herbal/floral thing dancing through the malts.. Not bad beer, in fact pretty tasty! guzzler67 (1285), Hanover, Maryland, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jan 14, 2005 Dark brown appearance with a small head and minimal lacing. Malty, fruity aroma with a slight medicinal note. Roasted, chocolate malt taste with a touch of toffee. Nicely carbonated and with enough hops to prevent the taste from becoming too cloying. Seems pretty close to being an English Strong Ale, though maybe the hops steer it to a different classification. Cornfield (4966), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 8, 2005 This pours deep brown, nearly black, in color with a barely perceptable tan head. Plenty of carbonation in the mouth. The aroma is of dark malts, roasteed nuts, some citric hop bitterness. It’s a harty drink with dark malts, a hint of roasted chocolate, dark fruits and some grapefruit hops. The alcohol comes through in the dry finish and as soon as it hits the belly. A decent drink. jde123 (715), Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 31, 2004 Dark brown, smells like aged cheese, which isn’t necessarily bad. Very strong alcohol aftertaste, but the inital impression is nice, kind of spicy with some nutmeg and fennel...but it’s that aftertaste.... Admiral (524), Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 27, 2004 Dark brown beer, creamy beige head. Smells Belgian, bready/spicy. Surprisingly light body, chocolaty malt and spicy, woody/herbal hops. There’s a little bit of dried fruit flavor. I kind of agree with TChrome about this being like Stone 8, except that I like this one more... TChrome (1299), Bedford, Texas, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 26, 2004 Beer pours very dark brown, bordering on black with a decently retained beige colored head. Aroma is reminiscent of many other American strongs, with mild grapefruit hops dominating and a bit of sweet malt. Flavor reminds me quite a bit of Stone 8th, with flavors of sweet malt, a bit of oak and a twinge of alcohol. Good not great ale. Sickboy282 (1100), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 25, 2004 Pours a deep brown hue with a small off-white head. Aromas of smoke, roasted nuts and a little mollasses. Flavors of the same. Similar to a porter yet with a slight more hops for bittering. Coffee, chocolate, and a little wheat.
