Aromas of smoke, roasted nuts and a little mollasses. Flavors of the same. Similar to a porter yet with a slight more hops for bittering. Coffee, chocolate, and a little wheat. hopscotch (5483), Vero Beach, Florida, USA

Pours very dark with a small, lasting, beige head. Translucent ruby when held up to bright light. The nose is malty with notes of roasted nuts, light smoke, mild molasses, wood, Russian black bread and floral hops. The flavor pretty much matches the aroma. Full-bodied and very creamy with medium carbonation. Moderately bitter, grassy finish. Yankovitch333 (612), Chesapeake City, Maryland, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 17, 2004 Poured a dark reddish brown with a thick foamy biege head. Woody roasted aroma that was sweet. Medium bodied mouthfeel. Mild chocolate, caramel, wood, and roasted coffee beans on the tongue. very malty. It reminded me of a porter in many ways. Gets better as you drink it, but overall it was a rather good brew! tiggmtl (4311), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 17, 2004 Mild, malty sweet caramel aroma with light underlying roastiness. Clear, very dark brown with ruby highlights. Decent, fine-bubbled, tan/brown head recedes to cover nicely. Lots of chocolate malt flavour, mild roast, sweet caramel. Fair hop bitterness balances nicely. Creamy and smooth texture with soft effervescent carbonation. Seems like a cross between a strong ale and a robust porter. A nice surprise. Bottle enjoyed with Enkerli and others. biermonk (259), San Francisco, California, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 9, 2004 Pours dark brown with tan head. Lighty roasted malt aroma with a bit a chocolate. Supposed 8 types of hops but I don’t detect any one of them. Flavor is rich with burnt malt, chocolate and quite acidic. I didn’t like it at first... The flavors just don’t blend very well, perhaps its too many different malts. But about halfway through the bottle it started to grow on me. Actually now its very appealing. Rich but also rough around the edges. I could get used to this. Frank (1066), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 7, 2004 Dark brownish garnet. Next to no head. I was expecting something Belgian-style here but that’s not the case at all. I’m not sure what it is quite. Maybe a Scotch ale but not really as it’s too well hopped and not that much like a Scotch ale at all but... you know... kinda. Nose is slightly chocolatey and maybe a bit roasty but overall very mild. Flavorwise, there’s much more going on with some nice dried fruit notes coming out and a healthy shot of bitterness as well as some alcohol coming out in the finish. Maybe a bit of ginger and some other spices. Gentle carbonation with a full mouthfeel. Not bad for brewery that at first glance seems to be more about schtick than good beer.
