Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Pretty mundane beer. I really didn’t taste any pomegranate, I don’t know that I would have even suspecting them had the label not been labeled. Just tastes like an amber beer really. Pretty uninspired.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with an off white head. Sweet caramel aroma with some fruity esters. The flavor has sweet, maybe lightly toasted malt and grassy hops. Pomegranate is very light. Nice.

Certainly not my favorite from He’Brew. Moderately interesting ale, just a little bit too floral perhaps and a touch too sweet. Not heavily fruity, nicely copper colored from the pomegranate. Now that I know it can be done I won’t look for another pomegranate ale.

(bottle) Cloudy copper body with a medium but diminishing off-white head. The aroma is sweet, with some fresh hop aroma, hay. It is floral and fruity; maybe faintly smells like pomegranate but I thought of grapes first. Very sweet up front, fruity, but the pomegranate makes only a faint appearance in the finish, though there is a tartness throughout. The alcohol is not very noticeable for 8%. Medium bodied, a little sticky. No, it isn’t overwhelmingly pomegranate, but that’s OK. If I wanted pomegranate juice, I’d drink juice.

My first He’brew brew. A pour of bright orange amber. Thin creamy looking head. A wonderful aroma of citrus fruit, malts, caramel and nuts. Flavour of malts, earthy hops, and dry fruit flavour. No pomegranate at all in the flavour. I would of called this an amber ale. The *% alcohol is very well hidden by the earthy flavours and malty overtones. Palate is slighty complex, and intriguing. A great beer, and a wonderful high slcoholn amber.

I could not taste the pomegranate which was both good and bad. I don’t want a fruity beer but if you call it pomegranate I should be able to taste it. It was Good but nothing special.
