Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. CREATION, 1996, C.E.: On the floor of a San Francisco Mission District loft, intimate friends squeeze luscious pomegranates by hand to brew the first 100 cases of the original HE’BREW beer. EVOLUTION: The culmination of the first decade of Shmaltz Brewing and a core offering for our second, ORIGIN renews this sacred covenant, sacrificing over 10,000 pomegranates for each precious hand-crafted batch. REVELATION, on-going: In Jewish tradition, pomegranates symbolize righteousness with seeds said to number 613, the total commandments in Torah. In Deut. 8:8, pomegranates, barley and wheat prove the bounty of the Land of Milk and Honey. The calyx atop the fruit inspired the original Jewish crown. One Persian hero of myth consumed a pomegranate and became invincible. Muhammad instructed: ’Eat the pomegranate, for it purges the system of envy and hatred.’ Newlywed Greeks eager for a family crush one under-heel for fertility. Buddha cured a child-devouring demoness of her evil habit by instructing her to eat a pomegranate. Whether for knowledge or temptation, for virtue or valor, for art or for love, revel in the sumptuous pleasure of ORIGIN. To life...L’Chaim!

Bottle shared by cdumler. Thanks! Orange pour with a small head. Hoppy aroma dominated by pomegranate. Multidimensional taste was caramel... pomegrate... caramel. Pomegranate is a little much. Full bodied.

1PT, 6Fl oz, brown bottle. Deep gold/amber in colour, compact whitish head which is creamy, leaves sticky blotchy lace in the glass. Aroma is sweetish with a trace of grapefruit. In the mouth, the beer has some fruity malts (berry notes), caramel malts, grapefruity hops come out near the end. Moderate bitterness with a little fruit sweetness in the finish. Medium body, a little syrupy. Light carbonation profile.

Clear reddish-copper with a lasting ring. Aroma is raisin cake with icing. Flavor begins similarly with spicy dark fruit cake, then turns to some earthy acidic citrus, resin, tea leaf, grapefruit, and molasses. Finish is a long balance of all the juicy flavors, along with a touch of alcohol. Near-medium body is mostly smooth and finishes dry.

Aroma is faint with just a hint of fruit. Color is a hazy gold with good carbonation and a thin tight head. Taste is bitter with a little malt. Starting with a light body it goes down with a sharp feel. Finish comes in bitter then a little malt comes on with just the slightest fruit showing with a tiny sweetness. In the after taste the bitterness rolls back in. Its a little disappointing, there is almost no fruit or flavor at all its just all bitter.

Light amber color with a pinkish head. Aroma of mild fruit, berries, candy and a little hops. Flavor of fruit, berries, tootsie roll. Pretty good for a fruit beer.

22oz bottle-Pours a orangish amber body with a small ring for a head in a flute glass. Aroma of sweetness and malt . Taste is of malt, sweetness, fruity, and some pomegranate. A decent tasting brew but definitely not my favorite from these guys.

Bottle (22oz) shared with HogTownHarry, tupalev & garthicus -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a clear orange-amber with an average size diminishing white head. Aroma of sweet malt, grain an light fruit. Flavour of light fruit, herbal hops and a decent bitter finish. Alcohol’s totally hidden. Average bodied. It’s alright, nothing really wrong with this, it’s a decent Fruit Beer.

Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, and Garthicus, courtesy of Harry. Dark yellow/orange, light bubbly small white head. Aroma of mild fruit and malt. Taste is ok at best - malty sweet and somewhat fruity - the fruit and sweetness are completely out of whack and unbalanced in my opinion. Not sure where the pomegranate comes in either. Thin body. Ok, had much better from these guys.
